Night falls and she breaks down at the palisade wall: "Because she couldn't save her parents and she couldn't save Benallers and now she won't be able to save Dekamran" - ch 10. Sage-Invigilator Angilly, the Palleseen Resident in [[Usmai]], is first seen at [[Slate House]] in the Water Lanes of [[Alkhalend]], dressed in Usmiat clothing and buckling a sword as she prepares to fight an illegal duel against [[Tarcomir]], the Loruthi envoy - "I ruined him" she says of her opponent, adding "Mostly me," - ch 1. Her partner [[His Tranquillity Oparan|Oparan]], the blind Alkhand, urges her not to fight; an intimate, trembling farewell passes between them, ending with his whispered "Gil. Live." - ch 1. She explains that Tarcomir is ruined and must fight for personal honour to escape it, having been recalled by the [[Loruthi Palatine Council]] as part of the peace treaty following the war between [[Pal|Pallesand]] and [[Lor]] - ch 2. She concedes the Palleseen are hated by the local gods: "With good reason," she admits - ch 1.

When [[Loret]], the newly arrived Cohort-Invigilator, demands to see the Resident, Angilly reveals herself and conscripts her on the spot: "I'm Sage-Invigilator Angilly. Consider this your first formal duty. I need a second and you're it. Commendation for arriving in the nick of time." - ch 1. At the duelling sand circle in the palace gardens, Angilly and Tarcomir fight - he with a Loruthi falchion, she with a Palleseen rapier - a mismatched pair permitted only because they are foreigners and thus "inherently transgressive in a thousand ways" - ch 2. She had been friends with Tarcomir for years, sharing drinks as the two foreigners in Alkhalend, and she deliberately gives him the chance to kill her as a last kindness, recalling "all those shared drinks" - ch 2. Tarcomir dominates early with a "blinding flurry" and "measured poetry" of cuts; Angilly is knocked sprawled and kills him by running him through while on her back - ch 2. She leaves her rapier in the sand and collapses beside the body.

Palace guards, a functionary, and three [[Tesemer|Louse Monks]] arrive. One monk contemplates killing Angilly on the spot as "the simplest" solution, but is overruled; armed guards take her into custody - ch 2. She is held in the cellar of [[Coregan]], Keeper of the Fifth Key, who despises her as a Palleseen and Kepishi influence-peddler, providing servant food, a stub of candle, and stagnant water - ch 4. Alone in the dark, Angilly reflects on her career in Pallesand's service, the [[Pal|Palleseen Sway]], and her genuine, unspoken romantic love for [[Dekamran]], the Second Son and nominated heir, whom she elevated to that position through scheming to save him from [[Gorbudan]]'s inevitable purge - ch 4. She acknowledges her superiors' plaudits are unearned and resolves that she "wanted him to keep thinking of her as just his friend" - ch 4.

Coregan attempts to transfer her to the [[House of Hard Angles]] to lose her in its buried cells. Angilly cuts her wrist-bonds with a hidden razor en route and, at the prison doors, drops into a guard stance when [[Loret]] appears with two [[Cotto]] thugs and publicly declares she has "found the Resident," forcing Coregan to back down - ch 4. Back at Slate House, Angilly interrogates Loret: "On the basis of your complete inability to properly report, I now accept that you have never heard the term 'tradecraft'." - ch 4. She learns from Loret that there was "a Pal woman in the prison who isn't me," an unexplained presence that troubles her - ch 4.

The next day, Angilly secures a formal audience with the Alkhand Oparan, reflecting that There was a time when I had to burn every scrap of credit I had, to secure an audience like this - ch 6. Oparan rules that the killing of the Loruthi emissary belongs to the Palleseen-Lor war, not Usmai's jurisdiction, and stays his hand from punishment. Angilly then casually requests a writ to extract a Palleseen held in the House of Hard Angles, which Oparan grants; Dekamran writes it and the Alkhand seals it - ch 6.

==== The Attack on the House of Hard Angles (ch 6-8) ====
Angilly and Loret descend into the House of Hard Angles by daylight to extract [[Drathel]], a Fellow-Archivist and Decanter held for "a misunderstanding." Angilly questions Drathel in terse shorthand about her background and transgression - "necromancy or decanting?" - and suspects she is from "that side of the border," Peor or [[Palinet]]'s sphere - ch 6. When a dozen hooded assassins advance, Angilly draws her rapier, presses a baton and a knife into Drathel's hands, and orders both women back into the cell. She lunges and slashes throats, but a killer disarms her; her sword is kicked into the central abyss-slot. She fights on with a knife - ch 6. The masked figure that appears is identified by Drathel as "the Warden," but Angilly flatly denies this: "That's not the Warden" - ch 6. The true Warden, a vast segmented horror, rises from the abyss and scours the hall of every killer who does not flee - ch 6.

After the attack, Angilly tears her own shawl to bind Loret's stab wound while Drathel stands useless. She lies to the Under-warden - "We didn't bring this trouble to you" - while tying off the wound - ch 7. She carries Loret out of the House and marches deeper into the Sand Lanes, refusing the palace escort's suggestion of the surgeons at the palace: "Too far" - ch 7. She threatens Drathel with expulsion from the Palleseen Sway: "Or else you are not only cutting yourself off from any assistance from the Residence, you are putting yourself outside the Palleseen Sway, and I'll write to Palinet in Peor to make sure she knows to have you shot on sight as a deserter." - ch 7. At the [[Fever Lodge]], she pays [[Kilbery]] from the Residence's emergency purse and promises what she can get through Pal merchants, Usmiat grandees, and "less-savoury contacts" - ch 7. She watches [[Yasnic|Happy Jack]]'s eerie contentment and feels rage at his happiness and her own losses, recalling events in [[Jarokir]] where "Some of them had been done to her; some of them she had done" - ch 7. She refuses thanks to the Reckoner: "You never thanked the Reckoner" - ch 7.

==== The Day of Milk and Flowers (ch 9-10) ====
Three days after Loret's stabbing, Angilly orders full Palleseen uniform for herself, Drathel, and Loret for the Day of Milk and Flowers festival, shutting down Drathel's attempt to skip out: "You're a Decanter. Go wandering all you like, you need to come back to the machinery of the Sway to offload what you scrounge up. So yes, you will, because otherwise this will become a hard country for you to do business in." - ch 9. At the pools beside the House of Tranquillity, she explains the festival to Loret: "What you just saw, is, obviously, the rankest piece of superstition and foolishness, exactly the sort of thing that perfection will do away with in the fullness of time." She identifies the frog god: "The frog is Kakrops. Patron deity of Usmai. Always has been. Built the city around his cave, the way they tell it." - ch 9. She explains the night's sanctioned sexual openness - "Except today. And tonight. When all that's off and just... go have fun, basically. With anyone you like. Or nobody. Or multiple people. So long as everyone's into it." - and presses a purse on Loret, ordering her to enjoy the city - ch 9.

That night, Angilly works on paperwork at the Residence. After seven years of reasons why "they never did," she and Dekamran cross the boundary they have maintained - drinking ramaht, speaking of friendship and alliance, and ending the night together - ch 10. Before dawn she sees him out the side door, knowing she has broken a boundary the [[Commission|Commission of Ends and Means]] will require her to report, and resolves to keep both her diplomatic purpose and her friendship intact: "She wants an Alkhand who is a friend to Pallesand, obviously, and in that she's doing her job. She wants Dekamran as her friend, though, and keeping both of those ambitions intact is a very fine needle to thread indeed." - ch 10. She returns to find Drathel smiling amiably in the dining room, having entered through the front while Dekamran was still exiting through the side - ch 10.

==== The Treaty Renewal at the Tesemer Compound (ch 11-12) ====
Angilly rides in the fourth of five howdahs atop ogrodons, two days out from Alkhalend, escorting Drathel toward [[Peor]] to hand her over to [[Palinet]]. She describes the Tesemer as "Children wearing their ancestors' old clothes, performing plays in a language they barely spoke any more" and "Tamed beasts, were the Tesemer, just as much as the monsters they rode or hunted with. And they knew it and hated it, but had grown used to the kennel." - ch 11. She confronts Drathel about Loret's stabbing, naming the [[the Halberandi monks|Halberandi monks]] and their use of the cord, and assigns her a written report, offering to omit whatever she actually stole - ch 11. At night, she sits with Loret and tells her she killed Tarcomir, that "Outreach nobody has clean hands," and that she wants to listen; Loret starts to speak of "what isn't written in the dispatches from home," then swallows the truth - ch 11. Alone and sleepless, Angilly reflects on the impossibility of her affair with Dekamran under both Usmai custom and Palleseen ordinance, then gets up, finds him awake by the window, and goes to him: "Shocking, liberating, to discover that I want this for me somehow outweighed all those weights in the other pan of the scale, and that he wanted it too." - ch 11.

At the Palleseen military camp in Peor, Angilly inspects [[Flint Postry]]'s operations, demanding to know what his "highly dangerous experimental logistics" are. Flint reveals he has recruited Peost locals as armed soldiers - "Seraphi" - issuing them batons and tablethi, subverting the local feudal order - ch 12. He shows her Croskin's command: approximately thirty demons in partial Palleseen uniforms who were freed from sealed jars and chose to stay in the world, declaring themselves "contracted to Pallesand." Angilly accepts the situation as "Palinet's problem, not mine" and forbids bringing the demons into Usmai - ch 12. She then sends them off with a full honour guard of demons toward the border - ch 12.

==== Gorbudan's Coup at the Waygrove (ch 13-16) ====
During the Alkhand's visit to the [[Alborandi]] compound, Angilly is absent; [[Gorbudan]] notes her absence before deciding against violence, and Dekamran laments her irreverent company - ch 13. On the road between a border post and Peor, near a village of [[Spiribandi]] snail-monks, Angilly reflects on her background: orphan, phalansteries, Outreach posting, sword skill learned in [[Farasland]], and her position as Sage-Invigilator of the School of Correct Appreciation - ch 16. She confronts Loret about watching her and asks what Drathel offered her; Loret deflects, claiming she was "thinking about snails" - ch 16.

A Tesemer Louse Monk appears behind them claiming to carry a message from the Alkhand, then attacks with a [[falx]]. Angilly survives the opening instant with a Farasland quick-draw and scores a cut on the monk's cheek, but is overwhelmed by the falx's reach; she is struck by the haft and momentarily loses track. Loret goes berserk and hacks the monk to death. Angilly is briefly frightened of Loret, then frightened of what the monk represents - ch 16. She kicks through monastery screens, threatens the old man at sword-point, and hears the news from the Alborandi compound - the Alkhand, the brothers, "all of it" - understanding "that, while her back was turned, a new age of Usmiat history had begun." - ch 16.

==== Gorbudan on the Mirror Throne (ch 17-19) ====
Angilly is not present during Gorbudan's consolidation of power, but is mentioned in his deliberations: Lhisamena has reported the failed assassination of the Palleseen Resident, and Gorbudan knows that "Angilly backed Dekamran and will not accept his removal quietly." He plans an invasion of Peor and more spending on sea-wall defences, having learned from Tarcomir how to counter Palleseen flying islands - ch 18. Gorbudan purges half the court, calls in the Tesemer, and governs in blunt, plain style, burning through a hundred years of Alkhalend's business in six days; he spares the Palleseen for now but trusts none of them - ch 18.

==== Dekamran's Escape to Peor (ch 20-21) ====
Seven days after Dekamran's imprisonment, Angilly and Drathel arrive at the House of Hard Angles with the Under-warden. Angilly embraces Dekamran through the bars: It's you. It's actually you. - ch 20. Drathel empties a sack of religious artefacts, tablets, statuettes, and jewellery onto the floor as payment. The Under-warden, consulting with the Warden's presence overhead, agrees: "She says yes. And tell Jack, yes. We have our deal." - ch 20. The Warden lunges from the dark, seizes the cell-door section of bars, and tears a hole in them. Angilly holds Dekamran; they flee before the priests arrive - ch 20.

At Flint's camp in Peor, Angilly hosts a formal reception. She mentally profiles Flint as "a horrible person, really" but finds him trustworthy company; "The thing about flint, though, is it's crude. Effective in a pinch, but steel is better." - ch 21. She wrestles with whether [[Ventures]] falls under her Outreach authority and decides it does not fully. After dinner, Flint leads a military inspection; Dekamran notes the batons in the hands of the rank and file. Flint shows them the demons; Croskin presents himself before Dekamran, who stares into its teeth without flinching - ch 21. Alone with Gil and Loret, Dekamran says "It's a lot." Angilly tells him: "Without your word, we do nothing. But you get to choose. And you have to choose." - ch 21. When he asks what happens to her if he walks away, she cannot form the word "no"; her hand creeps to his fingers. Dekamran mimes removing the crown he does not have, invites them to sit as equals, then sends Loret to fetch Flint - ch 21.

==== The First Engagement of the Brothers' War (ch 22-23) ====
Angilly rides in Dekamran's ogrodon howdah as liaison with the Pal forces. During the first engagement - a single Pal volley breaking a peasant levy - she fights a Tesemer assassin who boards the howdah, knocking the monk to her knees and driving her rapier through him after the Ibaleth mahout gores the monk - ch 22. She bellows at Loret, who has frozen: "Your knife, at least! Use your fucking knife!" - ch 22. The assassination fails; Loret survives; Dekamran lives - ch 22.

At the war council in the hills north of Alkhalend, Angilly objects to Flint and Dekamran's plan for a night attack through the Sand Gate: the gate has siege emplacements looking both ways and they would be destroyed. She feels "a door close, shut out of the planning." She recalls the original negotiations - Flint's demands, Drathel's demands, the Palleseen trade opening - and her own concealment of how easily Dekamran agreed. She considers his idealism reckless: "Either of them alone was bad enough. Put them together and suddenly it was trouble every which way." - ch 23. When Flint says "As to the gates, I've got just the thing," she is shut out of the decision - ch 23.

==== The Killing of Kakrops (ch 24-26) ====
Angilly accompanies Flint's ground column through the Sand Lanes toward the palace. When Lhisamena attacks Dekamran with a falx, Angilly deflects the blow by an inch - ch 26. A hookloper rider breaks through toward Dekamran; Angilly shoots the mount with her baton, then a demon crashes into the beast and rips the monk from the saddle - ch 26. When Kakrops erupts from its cave and leaps into Flint's right flank, crushing and devouring soldiers, Angilly and Dekamran protest Flint's order to fire; he will not countermand. Massed batons and the Palleseen Hands kill the frog god - ch 26. Angilly recalls Loret's astonished reaction to Kakrops being a frog: "Oh shit, it's a frog! Those Usmiat, ho ho ho. What a funny thing to hold sacred." - ch 26.

==== City in Mourning (ch 27-28) ====
Three weeks after the installation of Dekamran on the Mirror Throne and the deicide, Angilly writes her dispatch to Professor-Invigilator [[Flockersly]], constrained by the forced triumphant language of a Resident's report: "It was the way she'd had to write it. There was a certain language expected, of a Resident's report to the Archipelago." She recalls the grim coronation, the pools still stained with god-blood, the divine corpse she refused to look at - ch 28. "We won. We got what we wanted. Hooray for perfection! Not how she felt, but how she was constrained to report it." - ch 28.

[[Dalry]] and [[Annet]] arrive unannounced, seeking help to flee the Palleseen Sway. Gil recognises them from prior professional dealings and asks "which fingers they intend to break" before hearing their account of the camps on the Archipelago. She decides to help them rather than arrest them as dissidents - ch 28. She attends Dekamran in the throne room; he wears mourning colours and has no bodyguard. She calls him "Kama"; he snaps: "Gorbudan called me that. I don't want anyone to call me that again." - ch 28. She finally erupts: "We're doing this for you, Dekamran. I'm doing this for you." She confesses: "I didn't do this for Pallesand. I did this for you. Because Gorbudan would have had you killed. I sprung you from the House of Hard Angles. I gave you an army. All for you... Because you're my friend, Dekamran. Because I couldn't bear anything to happen to you." He only looks at her with "that damnable weak smile," and she wants to scream - ch 28.

==== Drathel's Operations in Alkhalend (ch 29-31) ====
Angilly is not present in Drathel's chapters but is the subject of their intelligence operations. Drathel's informant - formerly Angilly's aide - reveals that Angilly granted a private audience to a Sage-Inquirer of Correct Speech who arrived unannounced, then departed for the Waygrove with two fugitive scholars Angilly had previously helped escape. Drathel files this as leverage - ch 29. Angilly is described as recently granted a private audience to two fugitives and helped them reach the Waygrove; now under Correct Speech scrutiny - ch 29.

At a taverna celebration of the sack of Mantekor, Angilly joins Flint and his command staff. She drinks hus (fermented fish) and says: "I thought we'd won," not entirely sure what she means. Flint assures her: "We fucking won." - ch 30. Returning to the Residence, she finds Loret already drunk, having read Gil's letter home requesting a more experienced aide. Loret grips her knife; Angilly draws her rapier. Loret reveals she is not Loret: "I'm not Loret... They killed Loret." She screams, upends the desk, and flees - ch 30. Angilly writes a dismissal letter to the imposter "posthumously" - ch 34.

Dekamran's interior monologue traces his relationship with Angilly: friendship, shared danger, lovers after the Day of Milk and Flowers, her aiding him through the House of Hard Angles. On becoming Alkhand, he looked at her and saw "the Palleseen Resident," a machine. "He needed the Pals. He wanted Gil." - ch 31.

==== The Fever Lodge Takes In Loret (ch 32-34) ====
Angilly is mentioned in Loret's confession to Enshili: Loret wanted to be her friend; she betrayed Angilly for Drathel; "too much a part of the thing Loret had been fleeing." Loret "fled rather than add the Resident to her tally" - ch 36.

At the Residence, Angilly hosts a multi-course dinner for Palleseen merchants and officials, privately loathing the process. Drathel presses her to put a request to the Alkhand regarding a "treasure of singular value" in the Usrani monastery. Angilly refuses: "Under no circumstances," and passes the cruet - ch 34. Drathel argues that creating riots would force the Alkhand to lean harder on the Palleseen, calling it "the Outreach playbook." Angilly denies this: "You're wrong," because Outreach also taught you how to lie well - ch 34. A servant delivers a sealed note: "Send all your servants away." After agonising, she dismisses the entire staff. Dekamran arrives at the old side door, cloaked and dressed down. She struggles with the political meaning of accepting him: "If I take what he offers, I am making a bargain on behalf of Pallesand... A bribe of flesh and joy." Despite knowing what it means politically, she moves toward him and leads him upstairs - ch 34.

==== The Arrival of the Salient (ch 35-37) ====
The Palleseen ship [[the Salient|Salient (ship)]] arrives in Alkhalend with 400 troops under Sage-Broker [[Berkely]]. Angilly wakes with Dekamran in her bed - "We have done a bad thing, she thinks. Because it's preferable to, I have done a bad thing and he has done a pragmatic one." - ch 35. A messenger brings an official writ summoning her to the Salient's wardroom. In the wardroom, Berkely assigns Flint garrisoning for 400 troops "permanently," introduces [[Samellers]] as Gil's new aide, and delivers the real news: "The Usmai operation has now passed into the hands of Valuations, preparatory to the nation being formally invited to become a part of the Palleseen Sway." Gil and Flint are told they are reassigned: "But doubtless there are other less-tamed shores in both your futures, in due course." - ch 35.

Berkely notes that Angilly has already flagged the opportunity to harvest godflesh from the preserved body of Kakrops but advised against seizing it now to avoid destabilising the region. Drathel then presents a dossier of Angilly's alleged misconduct off the record: killing Tarcomir in an illegal duel, the missing aide Loret, receiving two fugitive scholars without apprehending them, and a romantic entanglement that compromises her professional judgment. Berkely reinterprets her cautious advice through this lens: her tiptoeing around local sensibilities was not prudence but a man keeping her "tied in a proper knot" - ch 37.

==== Wattery's Contracts and the Occupation of the Palace (ch 38-40) ====
At the audience with Alkhand Dekamran, Angilly enters in uniform to facilitate proceedings, "tense but outwardly composed." She runs through routine bureaucratic items efficiently. When Berkely declares the Kakrops Jars must be seized, Angilly argues the monastery's non-combatant status and the city's respect for the monks make the current arrangement stable. She is publicly overruled twice, hand raised to silence her, then personally undermined when Berkely says "You do know Alkhalend" in a way that implies she has compromised her position, and warns her: "Sage-Invigilator Angilly, it is, I'm sure, a constant battle, in Outreach. To know where the boundaries of proper conduct lie." She replies: "I have been here seven years. I know Alkhalend. Better than your pet Decanter. Trust me on this." Berkely orders her to return to the Slate House and await his word on "disciplinary matters." She does not leap into defiance; she complies - ch 39. Drathel notes she "heard hearts break, in the silence" - ch 39.

==== Gil's Arrest and the Destruction of the House of Hard Angles (ch 41-45) ====
Summoned by a clerk's card to discuss "operational discipline," Angilly prepares for a meeting with Berkely, reflecting that "She's far from the first servant of Outreach to discover that the two boats she has her feet on are moving apart." - ch 41. She refuses Samellers's company, calling him Berkely's creature: "You can drop the act. You're his creature, obviously. I don't see the need to hand you the rope so the noose is neat." - ch 41. She removes her sword, telling Samellers "We're not on the Archipelago." - ch 41.

In the palace, Berkely confronts her with reports on her operation. She warns him directly: "If you proceed with Drathel's idiot plan to render down the Kakrops Jars, you might as well set the whole country on fire. We killed their god, and I'd just about managed to keep our balance, after that." - ch 41. Berkely reveals he knows she helped Dalry and Annet escape through the Waygrove. He lays out his endgame: full absorption of Usmai into the Palleseen Sway, the Alkhand pensioned off, Berkely installed as Perfector. He insults her personally, mocking her relationship with Dekamran. Angilly draws her sword, grips it blade-first, and demands he withdraw the personal insult: "You and me. A personal insult. Which you will withdraw now." - ch 41. Berkely refuses. He calls Flint and three troopers and orders her imprisoned: "Take the bitch to the prison and throw her in. Direct order, Postry." - ch 41. She flips the sword on Flint, considers killing the troopers and Berkely, but "didn't have it in her, she realised. Not to kill Flint, nor these three soldiers who had only their orders and a complete lack of context about what was going on." - ch 41. Flint takes her sword and she is seized.

She is imprisoned in a cell in the House of Hard Angles. The House shudders with duelling rituals and Decanting. She reflects on losing "not to the Loruthi, not to Gorbudan, but to her own people," on the difficulty of "the narrow path of Palleseen Ends and Means" and that "everyone ends up making one compromise too many" in Outreach. She cannot undo the past: "No mage nor god nor Pal perfection could ever turn back time." - ch 45. Loret appears - "the useless one. The runaway one. The mad one with the knife" - carrying a pearl-bladed knife. She cuts the cell bars with a single pass, severing the iron which crumbles with sudden ancient rust. Gil and Loret leave the House; the walls are dark, wards gone. They find Caecelian and Enshili. Gil demands: "I need to get to Dekamran." Loret says: "Come with me. I'll take you to him." - ch 45.

Drathel, in the House, considers visiting Angilly but abstains, reflecting: "Sometimes you've got to be mean. It was a lesson Gil had learned, and plenty of others in Drathel's career." She notes she "screwed over the former Resident" who was in her way - ch 44.

==== The Surgery and the Duel in the Constellar Gardens (ch 46-47) ====
In the last of the night, Loret leads Angilly through Alkhalend, past Slate House (one light burning - Samellers still at work), heading upward toward the palace grounds. Angilly questions Loret about what happened to her; Loret says "I'm sorry." Angilly jokes they're even for the jailbreak. She deduces they are going to rescue Dekamran; Loret says No rescue-he's out. He's free. - ch 47.

They reach the Constellar Gardens, the hidden spot where Angilly killed Tarcomir. A gathering waits: Follo, Cotto pirates, a one-armed Tesemer, armed Emorandi, and Dekamran. Angilly rushes toward him; he greets her with a single trembling syllable but cannot embrace her, "as though there were bars between them still." She offers to fight alongside him. He says: "I am the disgrace of my people... I am the shame of my father." He must "correct" his faults and "show that I am worthy to be Alkhand. Or what am I?" He challenges her: I have to win my people back. Fight me. - ch 47. Angilly objects on duelling-gender grounds; Dekamran throws her a locally-made tableth rod. Follo officiates: five paces apart, then turn and speak the killing word. Angilly sees his fear, his trembling lip. She recalls a decade-long alternate life where he simply left, lived as an expatriate prince, and she could visit him. At five paces, she considers the roster for Pals who killed a king - how it might buy her back into the service - and swallows the killing word.
