Maserley is a Fellow-Invigilator and conjurer attached to the Palleseen army's department of Exceptional Stratagems, known throughout the series also as Caeleen's master and, in the second book, as "the cruel conjurer." A demonist of considerable technical skill and considerable malice, he functions in the first volume as the principal antagonist to Jack: a bully who operates through contracts, jurisdictional writs, and interdepartmental manoeuvring rather than direct violence, and who sets out to break Jack spiritually not out of any personal grudge but because Jack belongs to Prassel, a woman Maserley has hated since childhood. His most consequential act is the draining and killing of the three godlings-God, Zenotheus, and the Fisher King-using the tablethi generated to fuel Palleseen artillery, an act he performs alongside his old friend Thurrel and which he deliberately stages as a spectacle to shatter Jack's faith.
