Caeleen is a demon in a woman's shape - a succubus "made to be a mirror to desires" - whose arc across the three books traces a single, radical trajectory from owned property to revolutionary sovereign. Introduced in the Palleseen army as the bound familiar of the conjurer [[Maserley]], she is spent as a tool of seduction, surveillance, and battlefield labour before being freed by a contractual sleight-of-hand at the coronation of [[Masty|Feder IV]]. In the aftermath she becomes the travelling companion of [[Yasnic|Jack]], the man she was sent to ruin, and follows him into the exile community of Alkhalend, where she operates under the name [[Caeleen|Caecelian 'the Viper']] as a fencing tutor, killer, and agent of destabilisation. She dies fighting the Palleseen occupation of Alkhalend and descends to the [[the Kings Below|Kings Below]], where she wages a successful insurrection against the infernal hierarchy that once owned her. By the close of the series she is the architect of a free Hell, an ambassador of its new order, and the fixed point around which Jack's final reckoning with his own name turns.

Her identity is layered deliberately. In ''Days of Shattered Faith'' she appears initially as "the masked fencing tutor," an unnamed foreign woman teaching [[Enshili]] forbidden combat in the [[House of Tranquillity]], and only becomes identifiable as Caecelian when the Lodge's other members recognise her manner and the bone mask she wears. Her "fellow wife," a serpentine entity married to [[Ollery|Oathan]] alongside her, attacks the Pal line - ch 48. Caeleen is shot twice, stumbles, and is pulled from the fray by Oathan - ch 48. Enshili rushes to her. Caeleen kisses her, slashes her cheek, smears blood on a paper contract, and tells her: Yours now. Go to Jack. Tell him - ch 48. Caeleen dies and passes to hell - ch 48. Their blood washes away the chalk and the connection is gone - ch 15. Jack, wounded, cries out in "agony and joy" because she was there, just for a moment, and saved him - ch 15. ==== The Assault on the Lighthouse ====
In the morning after the failed talks with the Palleseen, Jack reports to [[Widow|Abellaime, 'the Widow']] that Caeleen came to him in a dream, drawn by his blood - ch 24. The Widow warns him not to draw circles in his dreams and discusses love as a destructive fungus - ch 24.

At the [[The Varinaen|Varinaen]], [[Varinecthes]] explains the redefinition trap: with a proper contract, a conjurer could summon a demon back, but the result would be only the conjurer's own memory of the demon, the original's true self overwritten by the conjurer's handwriting - ch 24. Jack then reveals that Caeleen was never his demon by contract: he made a "clerical error" freeing her from her previous master, [[Maserley|Caeleen's master]] - the unnamed conjurer who made her and whom Jack engineered the ruin of - ch 24. Jack later stands on the balcony of the Pandaemonium, which overlooks Hell, and resolves to enter it to reach Caeleen, but finds he cannot make himself fall - ch 32. The Widow explains that Hell's reality is held at arm's length by the observer's own perception, specifically sight, and blindfolds him with her red-and-black kerchief - ch 32. Jack throws himself off the rail and falls into Hell, landing on jagged ground surrounded by circling demons - ch 32. He calls Caeleen's name; she touches his face, kisses him, and he knows her by touch - ch 32.

Caeleen reveals her situation: "I'm a free demon in Hell with the strength of a contract still on me. I'm bringing war to the Kings, Jack, but I need more strength. I need the hammer Above to break the chains Below. And you're holding that hammer but you won't give it to me. I hold my hand out and you're not there." - ch 32. She tells him she cannot reach him because his Above-self has been hollowed out by his pursuit of wickedness for conjuration: "Ruin yourself enough, I should be able to reach up and touch your fingers as you reach down to me. But you're not there. Just a gap in the shape of you. Who is it that's done these things, Jack? Who's trying to reach me, if not you?" - ch 32. Jack tears off the blindfold and finds himself still astride the balcony rail, never having left; the three gashes on his knee are real - ch 32.

==== The Challenge to the Lich Queen ====
A four-armed bug-demon assassin, summoned through accumulated conjuring errors and sent by the [[the Kings Below|Kings Below]] to kill Jack, defects mid-strike, declaring: "I reject the rule of kings. Down with the Scotolaries of Hell. Misery and Wickedness!" - ch 34. The demon obeys Caeleen's creed over its masters' command and vanishes as a defector in her rebellion - ch 34. Caeleen's creed, "Misery and Wickedness," is described as the recasting of the only leverage the powerless have on the world - ch 34.

A [[Realms Infernale|King Below]] appears at the Widow's balcony offering her family's Hell-treasuries and power in exchange for Jack's death; the Widow refuses, pointing out the King only offers because Caeleen's rebellion threatens its rule, and calls it "a petitioner" - ch 34.
