Croskin is a demon of the Realms Below pressed into a Palleseen military uniform and a rank of Cohort-Monitor, a creature of "malign spite, deception and violence" who nevertheless adopts the identity of a soldier with a sincerity that unsettles every human who encounters him. Summoned and bound by the dead Invigilator [[Galversty|Companion-Invigilator Galversty]], he remained in the world after his summoner's death because he "didn't go anywhere," and was absorbed into the army of [[Pal|Pallesand]] as a curiosity, a weapon, and eventually something closer to a comrade. Across the arc of ''Days of Shattered Faith'', he commands a regiment of demons freed from sealed jars who chose to stay Above, wears a Kepishi uniform as a life-sustaining contrivance, and fights in battles where his very presence is "an offence to the order of the world." His significance to the series lies in the question he embodies: whether the structures of human civilization - uniforms, ranks, drills, the word "we" - can make a monster into a person, or whether that personhood is always conditional, always revocable by the next officer with a contract and a blade.

His nature is demon-nature - spite, envy, violence - and he acknowledges this openly, telling Caecelian "I would worship you. Or tear you down for envy." But beneath the compulsion of contract and the architecture of the uniform, something closer to genuine feeling persists: the narrator records "sorrow-like and loss-ish things" moving through him when the Palleseen flag is betrayed, and his final speech to Flint is structured around the word "made" - ''you made me one of you'' - as though the act of being fashioned into a person is itself the bond he cannot sever. He is a large, monstrous demon stuffed into a Palleseen uniform bearing the rank of Cohort-Monitor, a commission Flint has issued and for which he has had a uniform made - ch 12. Flint explains that his demonist, [[Galversty|Companion-Invigilator Galversty]], died of swamp fever, leaving his contracts loose; Croskin "didn't go anywhere" and was "donated to the department" - ch 12. Because we are anathema to the Usmiat, most hated of hated, we made ourselves their allies. Because it would appal them. A stain on their souls they will never be rid of" - ch 48. When Flint abandons his troops and drops from the ogrodon, Croskin seizes him, carries him up a wall, and sets him down in a side street - ch 48.
