Gil wakes with Dekamran in her bed, a forbidden liaison she feels guilty about. A messenger brings an official writ summoning her to the [[the Salient|Salient (ship)]]'s wardroom under [[Berkely]]'s order. She wakes Dekamran, who slips out casually to rejoin his escort - ch 35. In the wardroom, Berkely informs Gil and Flint that the Usmai operation has passed into the hands of Valuations, preparatory to formal invitation into the Palleseen Sway - ch 35.

==== Wattery's Contracts and the Occupation of the Palace (ch 38-40) ====
In an audience in the House of Tranquillity, Berkely raises the Kakrops Jars and declares they must be seized for the Alkhand's "security." Dekamran identifies them as "the body of god" and flatly refuses: "It is not something for your soldiers to seize. I forbid this." Berkely escalates, declaring the Alkhand must be placed under "protective custody," his access to nobles and generals controlled, his person escorted at all times. Angilly is publicly overruled twice, then personally undermined. Pal soldiers are already at the door to "escort" Dekamran - permanently, until Usmai enters the Sway - ch 39. In the streets of the Sand Lanes, news arrives that Alkhand Dekamran is now reachable only through Palleseen petition, effectively a prisoner in his own palace - ch 40.

==== Gil's Arrest and the Destruction of the House of Hard Angles (ch 41-45) ====
Berkely reveals his endgame: the Alkhand will announce Usmai's absorption into the Palleseen Sway, cede governance to a new Perfector, and retire to an estate. He insults Gil personally, mocking her relationship with Dekamran; she draws her sword and is ordered imprisoned in the House of Hard Angles - ch 41. Berkely plans to pension Dekamran off after Usmai is absorbed - ch 41.

Dekamran, held as a puppet in the Alkhand's chambers, traces back through his memories the chain of decisions - from Angilly freeing him from the House of Hard Angles, to saying yes to Flint across the Peost border, to crowning himself after Kakrops's death - that led to his current captivity, acknowledging he could not blame Berkely - ch 43. He goes to the door to demand to see the Resident; the guards are gone. He finds them dead and [[Caeleen|Caecelian 'the Viper']] approaching down the corridor, her skia coated in blood, wearing sackcloth and a demon mask. [[Enshili]] reveals herself; Loret is also present, in shock, holding a knife - ch 43. They escape through a hidden window into the Constellar Gardens; Loret kills a Pal soldier in a single fluid motion, cutting his baton, tableth, arms, and throat - ch 43.

At a backroom tavern near the docks, a gathering of anti-Palleseen conspirators has assembled. Dekamran addresses them, admits his mistakes, claims his right as heir and Alkhand, and asks to lead them in war. Follo steps forward and publicly rejects him: "Your name - I am sorry, Your Tranquillity, but you have eaten away at your name, one decision at a time, and now it will not bear you." Dekamran protests - Gorbudan and Premath are dead, he is the last son, he is the Alkhand - but Follo's grief says no one would follow him. Dekamran shouts that he is not the Palleseen's creature, but sees their doubt. He says "Wait," understanding at the last, and steps back, beckoning Enshili to him - ch 43.

Meanwhile, Gil, imprisoned in the House, reflects on losing not to enemies but to her own people. Loret appears with a pearl-bladed knife and cuts the cell bars. They exit into the Sand Lanes. Gil demands, "I need to get to Dekamran." Loret says, "Come with me. I'll take you to him" - ch 45.

==== The Surgery and the Duel in the Constellar Gardens (ch 46-47) ====
Loret leads Angilly through Alkhalend to the Constellar Gardens, to the hidden spot where Angilly killed Tarcomir. A gathering waits: Follo, Cotto pirates, a one-armed Tesemer, armed Emorandi, and Dekamran. Angilly rushes toward him; he greets her with a single trembling syllable. He wants to embrace her but cannot, "as though there were bars between them still" - ch 47. Angilly offers to fight alongside him. Dekamran says he is "the disgrace of my people," "the shame of my father," and must correct his faults and prove himself worthy to be Alkhand - ch 47. He challenges her: "Fight me." He throws her a locally-made tableth rod; he holds a matching one. Follo officiates: five paces apart, then turn and speak the words - ch 47. At five paces, Angilly turns and swallows the killing word. Dekamran speaks his. The flash sears her eyes; his shot strikes her. "The world was lost to cleansing fire" - ch 47.

==== The Battle for Alkhalend (ch 48-49) ====
The following day, Orhuhst watches from the Water Lanes with a hidden Cotto force; a coalition of Tesemer, Emorandi, Sand Lanes bravos, and foreigners boards his ship. Dekamran arrives, now Alkhand, in armour, and gives the signal to attack. His ogrodon charges Flint's column in the mill district - ch 48. Dekamran charges his ogrodon into the trapped Pal column; a Pal boy cuts the wagon ropes, spilling the godflesh jars onto the Pals below - ch 48. After the battle, Orhuhst supervises loading the jars onto the captured vessel. Dekamran visits atop his ogrodon. They exchange a wary farewell; Orhuhst predicts they will be enemies one day. The Cotto plan to fire the Pal engines as a departure salute - ch 48.
