[[Hellgram]] is brought before the Sisters at the pit's edge. He smiles, breaks a glass ward from his gauntlet cuff, and detonates the wards binding the centipede creature. In the darkness the creature kills a Vulture who lights a lamp. When the lamps flare back, Hellgram draws his spectral sword and points it at Carelia, not the creature; the centipede coils protectively around him. Evene is in the creature's jaws, being dismembered - ch 44. Hellgram reveals the creature is his wife - "You had my wife. All these years, you had my wife" - though Carelia shows no comprehension. The creature rushes Carelia, seizes her, lifts her to the ceiling, and kills her.
