Gadders is a Palleseen Archivist assigned to the decanting apparatus in the interrogation chambers of the Donjon in Ilmar, the instrument through which the Palleseen state addresses anomalies it cannot classify within its existing taxonomies of belief and divinity. He appears in a single chapter of ''City of Last Chances'', in which he and his colleague Archivist Riechy are tasked with operating the decanting equipment on Yasnic after the latter's public healing of Ruslav and the visible arrival of God at his shoulder. Gadders's significance to the series lies not in his individual trajectory-he is, after all, driven from the room before the apparatus is ever activated-but in what his presence and language reveal about the bureaucratic machinery that governs the Palleseen Sway's response to the miraculous.
