Yasnic is the last priest of God, a shrunken, ill-tempered divinity who lives on a shelf in a freezing room in occupied Ilmar, and the only human being in the series whose arc spans all four books from beginning to end. Born Ilmari, raised in a dying faith by his dead master [[Kosha]], he is introduced as a beggar too poor to afford a blanket and too faithful to offer a false blessing, spending his days translating and carrying and starving while the Palleseen Occupiers criminalise his language and his priesthood. God appears on the bench opposite; they discuss the fate of [[Orvost, the Divine Bull]] and God explains how the gods declined: "We scared people... And then we bored people." Yasnic, now an apostate, tends wounded fugitives from the failed [[Siblingries]]' march in a cellar in the Gutter Districts. He reflects on Kosha's death and his own broken vows. Alone and apostate, he discovers he can see the full horde of abandoned, degraded gods infesting Ilmar's Gutter Districts - river gods, ancestral bird-gods, mine gods, Orvost shrunken to cat-size - all begging him for priesthood, because his apostasy left a visible "god-shaped gap." The narrator observes: "God was alone on the streets, a shabby little hairy figure, no more or less than all the other verminous failed divinities that infested Ilmar like fleas." Inside the Anchorage, Ruslav demands God heal the dying [[Shantrov Sirovar]]. God refuses, saying the healing rules hurt Him and Shantrov invited the possession. God tells Ruslav "You are not My priest. There are rules. I shouldn't even have healed you." Yasnic offers a compromise: "No. But I'll build a shrine. I'll carry it on my back, so nobody comes and desecrates it. I'll make a home for you. If you heal him. And her. As much as they can be healed. A shrine. A little house. Days later, Yasnic enters the Anchorage having left his crowd of forgotten gods outside the door. He tells Langrice that people bring him offerings - food, money, toys, demands carved on wood - because he now keeps a shrine to all the forgotten gods. "Like a boarding house, really. I suppose that makes me a landlord. What a thought." He reports visiting Ruslav at his house at the edge of the firebreak, where Ruslav is "waiting" and receiving offerings from locals who think his vigil protects them. Yasnic says "They'll come back." Langrice counters, "Something'll come back wearing their faces." Yasnic insists it will be them - or some part - united with "the old days of Ilmar." God will not speak to him; Yasnic complains about the loneliness of being the only visible deity. God materialises atop the box, forbidding the brothel; [[Life Of Dead Trees]] and [[Fisher King|The Fisher King]] also emerge for tea - ch 7.

A Statlos arrives with a squad: the healed man has died. Yasnic is taken away without resistance - ch 7. In the officers' quarter, [[Thurrel]] (Fellow-Archivist, Decanter) questions him about the spy's death, which was caused by a ghost-eater arrow; the healing reversed because the spy's intelligence would have caused harm. Thurrel proposes decanting Yasnic: "Only I can't. Fight. Hurt people. At all. Under any circumstances" - Yasnic's explanation of his absolute pacifism. [[Maserley]] arrives with [[Caeleen]], a bound succubus, wanting to claim Yasnic for Exceptional Stratagems. Prassel arrives and reclaims him for the hospital department, telling Maserley to "have a man" if he wants him. As Thurrel catches fallen tablethi, he tells Yasnic: "I know what you didn't bring with you," hinting at the box hidden in Mother Semprellaime's wagon - ch 9.

[[Cosserby]] sees Yasnic being escorted by a Statlos toward the prison quarter and, after initial refusal, turns and hurries back to follow them - ch 8.

==== The Great Advance (ch 10-13) ====
The evening before the major offensive, the department dines together. Yasnic arrives late carrying his wooden box; Banders playfully punches him and teases him about being whipped and arrested the same day. He feeds the nature thing and the grim spearman, eats an inadvisable quantity of radish darts, and mutters "Oh God save me" in Maric while God stands beside his plate, arms folded, "pointedly not saving him from anything" - ch 10. God insists Yasnic reveal his real name: "Tell them your name isn't 'Jack'! Don't let them say who you are! Tell them you're my priest, Yasnic." Yasnic refuses: "I'm not your priest any more, remember? I'm everyone's priest. Or nobody's. I'm just a sort of general purpose priest substitute" - ch 10. [[Masty]] reveals he has been in the camps "since I was very small" and deflects Yasnic's questions about his childhood - ch 10.

That night, Yasnic lies in his tent and argues with God about the coming battle. God warns: "Your ghost could end up all over. Never find its way home." Yasnic tells God not to heal anyone. God says: "I have a name. I had one once" - ch 11.

At dawn, the vanguard of Unnaturals is destroyed by bonecutters and ghost-mines. The hospital moves forward; Yasnic and Masty set up tables while the Butcher triages. They take orange salts, then blue salts, then lilac salts as the day progresses; Yasnic chokes on his first dose - ch 12. When one of Alv's students dies of hidden internal bleeding, Yasnic kneels beside the body, argues with his box and with "nothing at all," begs for time, and tries to command a resurrection. There is no miracle. He nearly destroys the box with his boot; Banders hugs him from behind and says "I know" - ch 12.

The following day, a three-horned war-beast overruns the forward surgery. Yasnic goes back for the box; God and the two other deities stand on it amid the wreckage. The nature god dances and bows, distracting the lizard-rider, but the beast's metal-studded tail sweeps round and breaks Yasnic's torso-ribs and spine. He lies in the mud. Masty refuses to leave him; the wagons vanish into smoke, and Yasnic and Masty are left between the lines - ch 13.

==== Between the Lines (ch 14-15) ====
Yasnic's shattered body is reassembled by God involuntarily, without prayer or request, pouring the damage into Himself as an infinite repository of hurt - ch 15. Yasnic, Masty, and Banders are trapped in a muddy hollow. Banders scouted and returned with three Pal troopers left behind: [[Lidlet]], [[Paucelry]], and [[Klimmel]]. God bickers with Yasnic; the nature deity and the spear god can only point toward the nearest sea (Fennimouth Port), which Banders takes as confirmation of her own navigation - ch 15.

They crawl across the devastated battlefield at night. A skirmish with four Loruthi soldiers kills Paucelry, gut-wounds Klimmel, shoots Lidlet through the breast, and shoots Masty. Yasnic begs God to heal the dying Klimmel and Lidlet. God refuses-they are Pals, killers. Yasnic threatens to convert to the nature deity's faith and deny God entirely: "I'll worship - I'll worship him. Him with the mask and the woodlice" - ch 15. God capitulates. Yasnic forces Klimmel and Lidlet to swear never to harm anyone again; both swear, and their wounds close. Lidlet, practical and terrified, orders secrecy: "God-stuff means this never happened if you don't want to end up on a Decanter's table and your heart in a jar" - ch 15. Masty returns with three horses; the group rides toward the Pal lines - ch 15.

[[Cosserby]] notes on the retreat that Yasnic is unaccounted for; [[Prassel]] absorbs the news of the missing orderlies without expression - ch 14.

==== The Gallete Island (ch 16-19) ====
Eight days after the battle, Yasnic returns to the department visibly distressed. Late at night, Alv finds him crying and he confesses the anguish of his gift: he "saves" people only to watch them die again as balance corrects itself. Alv recognises her own burden in him and comforts him - ch 16. Morning brings a massive flying Gallete island as transport for the entire Forthright Battalion; Ollery tells Yasnic: "That," Ollery told him, "is our ride" - ch 16.

Aboard the island, Yasnic is terrified of flying and refuses to leave his tent until Banders coaxes him out. He cannot parse the anti-Maric racial humour in an authorised play; Banders is defensive, then angry, then lets it go - ch 17. Walking toward a brothel, Yasnic reveals that sex is forbidden to him as a former priest: "I'm a priest. I'm forbidden" and later, "all my life I was a priest. And it was forbidden. And I thought that, after I stopped being a priest. Then it would be different. But then I... I went to... there was someone who... and. Couldn't, basically. Because it was still forbidden. In here" - ch 17. Three large men appear and arrest him for murder - ch 17.

The tribunal concerns [[Klimmel]]'s death: Klimmel got into a brawl and dropped dead of a gutshot wound with no baton fired, because the healing reversed. Yasnic pleads he heals, not curses: "It's not like that. It's not something I make happen. It just does. It's the way it is" - ch 18. Prassel argues there is no murder case: Klimmel was "judge, accused and executioner in one." [[Runkel]] pronounces: the army cannot have soldiers fearing to fight; Yasnic receives twelve lashes (ten for the incident, two for speaking out of turn) - ch 18. Afterward, Lidlet questions Yasnic from written notes about the precise rules of his conditional healing; Yasnic concludes intent is the key - ch 18. Lidlet requests transfer to the hospital department, arguing she can no longer serve as a regular soldier - ch 18.

Alv had hidden Yasnic's box inside nested boxes and sat on it to prevent Thurrel from confiscating it under a death-sentence paper - ch 19. God erupts in fury at the army's prohibition on healing: "They said what? Forbid me, will they? I am the bloody font of forbiddances" - ch 19. Yasnic warns God that defying the army means Jack will be shot and God will be decanted. God shifts to wanting Lidlet as a convert - ch 19. Two nights later, Ollery finds Yasnic healing a Gallete man with lemon blood fever, past the point Ollery's tonic could help; they forge a tacit pact of mutual non-disclosure - ch 19. Maserley approaches Thurrel to learn the rules of Yasnic's religion so he can "ruin him. Spiritually" - ch 19.

==== Arrival in Bracinta (ch 20-21) ====
The Forthright Battalion arrives in Southern Bracinta. Yasnic sets up the Butcher's stitching station during the planned assault on the city. He asks Tallifer whether going first isn't just getting hurt more; she explains the glory, the dispatches, the commendations - ch 21. After two hours of silence with no casualties, the department moves into the woods toward the city. Yasnic, anxious, asks whether they should send someone after Lidlet; he says "I just think I may have done a bad thing." Tallifer snaps at him - ch 21. Masty and Lidlet return with a single casualty: a soldier with a broken ankle. The Loruthi melted away before superior numbers; the whole day passed without a single shot fired - ch 21.

==== Leave in Magnelei (ch 22-26) ====
During camp leave outside Magnelei, Yasnic drinks forbidden rummell, counting sips, claiming he'll do penance. [[Lidlet]] confronts him: she tried to shove a student, felt lethal pain at the impulse, and cannot drink without risking a killing blow that would kill her. She vows: "I am going to find a way to crack this" - ch 22. [[Caeleen]] enters Yasnic's tent to seduce him on Maserley's orders, sent to destroy his faith. Yasnic refuses on religious grounds. Caeleen reveals she can see God: I see him because he's there - ch 22. God bursts in demanding a libation and rages. Caeleen learns Yasnic is not a priest and plans to tell Maserley she failed; Yasnic invites her to return. God rages at Jack for encouraging her return; Yasnic exits the tent and is bagged over the head - ch 22.

[[Masty]] is absent from the department during Yasnic's kidnapping, having slipped away because the celebration's "cheer" had become intolerable - ch 23. Yasnic and Tallifer are bound to wooden frames in a consecrated hollow by a hidden [[Zenotheus]] cult led by [[Pirisytes]]. Yasnic recognises the god's avatar on Pirisytes's shoulder and identifies it aloud as [[Zenotheus]]. He reveals he can see all gods, that he was imprisoned for god-smuggling out of Ilmar, and that he had a friend who was a priest of Zenotheus. Pirisytes spares them: "God-smuggling. That's worth something" - ch 24. The three negotiate a deal: the cult will not sacrifice anyone associated with the hospital department, but the hospital must treat wounded cultists with no questions asked - ch 24. Caeleen steps from the trees, sent by God to check on Yasnic; Tallifer warns him never to thank a demon - ch 24.

Yasnic visits Mother Semprellaime's wagon to consult her "as a scholar" about demons, asking whether they have a "self," a personality independent of contract and conjurer. She affirms: "No. They're demons. And yes. They're also people" - ch 25. Yasnic protests: "It's their choice. They're people. Individuals." He does not ask the final, "naked" question. He bolts for the Magnelei leave rota - ch 25.

On the leave rota into Magnelei, the Butcher confirms the Accessories have their idiot passes and departs, saying "I'll see you next back at the camp"-words that prove poor prophecy - ch 26.

==== The Market Brawl (ch 27-31) ====
In Magnelei's stadium, Lidlet corners Yasnic and demands he explain the rules God imposed on her. He explains: the sole rule is no harm; avoid drink and impulses; God will take the gift back capriciously. God cackles on Yasnic's shoulder and answers most of Lidlet's edge-case questions permissively - ch 28. Caeleen waits outside; in a dark tavern she explains Maserley sent her to corrupt Yasnic and describes her contract as a cage: "My contract is a cage, Jack. Where its bars bite, I am constrained to take the shape it binds me to and be what my master specifies" - ch 28. Yasnic asks: "And what about the space between the bars?" Caeleen calls God "the saddest stain of godliness" she has ever seen. Yasnic simply looks at her, and she relents - ch 28. The Fisher King splits Yasnic's clay mug and screams in gibberish; God decodes the message: Banders is in trouble - ch 28.

Yasnic rescues Banders from a cell, heals his own broken nose instantly, and they set off to find Masty. He reveals God will not heal Banders specifically: "God just says... He won't do you. Can't, sorry. He says can't." The reason is unknown even to Yasnic - ch 30. Masty is found seated on the Hackle Throne, revealed as [[Masty|Feder the Fourth]], rightful king of Bracinta - ch 30.

In the market brawl, Yasnic cannoned into Lidlet, knocking candles from her arms; the locals catch up with the whole group. Lidlet lunges at a Bracite who kicked Banders; Yasnic tackles her to stop her. They cling to each other "like two wrecked sailors with a single plank between them" - ch 31. Masty, in a trance of old trauma, is struck; Lidlet catches him before he falls - ch 31. A provost officer recognises Ollery, calls him "Murderer," and fires at his face; Masty pushes the man's wrist upward, destroying a stone hero instead. The officer orders the entire group arrested - ch 31.

==== The Fireberg Battle (ch 32-35) ====
Imprisoned in Magnelei, Yasnic talks to God from the box; God mocks his day of "strumpets and brawling" - ch 32. He is sent to apply alchemical paste to Ollery's flogged back after the Butcher receives sixteen lashes. Ollery confesses to Yasnic that he poisoned an entire regiment's Higher Orders at a dinner fifteen years ago because his wife [[Ennit]] had an affair with a Fellow-Invigilator. Ollery refuses Yasnic's offer to heal him: "I will not be bound by your creed, boy. You understand me? I will be keeping my options open" - ch 32.

During the Loruthi fireberg bombardment, Yasnic works the lesser wounded while God on his shoulder visibly struggles against His abhorrence of violence. God initially refuses to heal Banders: "I cannot heal her. She cannot come to me. Not her, out of all of them" - ch 33. [[Lidlet]] arrives uninjured and begs Yasnic to heal her dying squadmate [[Foley]]. Yasnic refuses, citing the Palleseen prohibition. He experiences a crisis: "I'm not a man of faith any more." God responds, "Well to hell with you. I will bloody do it, and sod the Pals. Forbid me, will they?" and leaps from Yasnic's shoulder to heal Foley - ch 33.

On the corpse-mound, God begins healing wounded behind Yasnic's back. Yasnic digs until he uncovers Pirisytes, dead, and takes Zenotheus into his box despite God's refusal: "He's gone. He's dead. And I couldn't anyway. Swore himself to his god, didn't he. Can't be one of mine" - ch 34. [[Life Of Dead Trees]] dances one final time, releasing spores that make the Loruthi forget Yasnic and Masty, then crumbles to fungus and woodlice - ch 34.

==== The Magnelei Standoff (ch 36-39) ====
Yasnic is absent from the field when Lidlet bargains with God to save Cosserby. Lidlet calls him "Maric Jack" and asks "Where the hell's Jack when you need him?" - ch 36. The "writ of Maric Jack" is referenced as a standing order governing the stretcher-bearers' duty - ch 36.

In the torture tent, Cosserby can no longer activate the torture chair because he "took a loan of a whole body, on the battlefield, because it was that or die. Now someone was knocking at the door for it" - ch 38. Prassel demands to know "who else did Jack get to?" and learns the effect happened without Yasnic's physical presence. Her face sets: It's worse. It's spreading. He's worse than I thought - ch 38.

At the fire outside the hospital, Prassel names Alv and Lochiver as being watched and warns that Yasnic is next and "a dangerous man to be close to" - ch 39. A notice from Correct Speech's Higher Orders expresses concern about sedition in the hospital department, unexplained deaths among soldiers, and Yasnic's prior caution - ch 37.

==== The Draining of the Gods (ch 40-42) ====
At the Magnelei prisoner exchange, Yasnic sits at a taverna table opposite a fancy-dressed old man who speaks to him in Maric. The man reveals himself as [[Varinecthes|Varney]], the ancient sorcerer of the flying tower, immediately identifying God, Zenotheus, and the Fisher King in Yasnic's box. [[Ghastron]] delivers a monologue on contracts and servitude. Yasnic asks where Ghastron would be if truly free; Ghastron answers: Here. With him. No hell is sweeter - ch 40. Prassel grabs Yasnic's collar and desperately tries to convey that he should desert in Magnelei, but Yasnic misreads the warning as a trap - ch 40.

The next day, Yasnic goes to Lidlet's tent intending to hand her the box and the faith; instead she shows him [[the Loopholes|the Ninety-Seven Loopholes of God]] and [[the Pledge|the Pledge (conversion form)]], arguing that soldiers need codified rules. Yasnic explodes: "You cannot take out... insurance with God. You can't just be a bloody murderer all your life and then give it all up when it's you on the sharp end" - ch 40. He visits Mother Semprellaime's wagon to find Caeleen and offers to burn her contract. Caeleen stops him in horror: the contract is the only thing keeping her in the world; without it she returns to the Kings Below. She calls them "demon happiness" - ch 40.

Provosts storm the hospital tent. Yasnic takes a blow to the face; God heals him instantly, horrifying the provost. They take him. Maserley arrives with Caeleen and claims Yasnic as property: "what do you think chains and contracts are for, exactly?" Caeleen, with a "cruel sneer" that still contains an apology, collects God, Zenotheus, and the Fisher King into the box - ch 41. Caeleen delivers Maserley's taunt to Prassel: "It's a long time since he's broken a priest. He's looking forwards to it" - ch 41.

In Thurrel's hut, Thurrel converts the three godlings' accumulated faith into charged tablethi-"around nine artillery rounds or a hundred charged batons." The box crumbles to "friable, worm-eaten wood" - ch 42. Maserley goes to the guard tent where Yasnic sits manacled and reveals: "Your gods are dead. I made sure of it myself. I've just watched my friend Thurrel draw every little dreg of them to fuel the artillery" - ch 42. Yasnic, an oath-bound pacifist who has endured years of being pushed around, breaks. His face contorts; he swears: "You've killed God? You've killed the one thing keeping you safe from me, you ignorant bastard. I will destroy you. I swear it. I will ruin you the worst way possible. And if I can't swear to God any more, I swear to every other damn thing in the world that I will not rest, alive or dead, until I have made a wasteland of your entire fucking life" - ch 42. Maserley, swanning out, stops with heart pounding, realising he has never seen anyone as utterly changed. The ground shakes; something vast and flaming strikes the camp - ch 42.

==== The Purge of the Hospital (ch 43-45) ====
Yasnic sits chained in a small tent, mourning God's death and reflecting on his life as the last priest of God, on [[Kosha]]'s hanging, and on his own failure to keep his oath of vengeance - ch 43. He is brought before the dying [[Runkel]], who pre-emptively swore to follow the Ninety-Seven Loopholes of God and named Yasnic as the one to heal him. Runkel begs: "I will pardon you. I will pardon them all. Your accomplices. Your faithful. They will live and you will live. Free, all. If I live. Make me live, Jack. Make me whole" - ch 43. Yasnic breaks down: "You stupid bastards. I would, if I could. I'd do it. But you killed God. You sent Him to the Decanters, you dumb sons of bitches. I don't have a spark of healing left in me" - ch 43. Runkel dies over hours; Yasnic and Cosserby are beaten with truncheons - ch 43.

In the barracks shed containing about forty prisoners, Yasnic notices his injuries are healed-ribs, knee, teeth all restored. God appears in the corner, having healed him, explaining: "I did not want to fix that son of a bitch" - ch 43. The next morning, Banders appears with a medicine box containing Zenotheus and, weeping, begs Yasnic for help. He agrees to listen - ch 43.

At Thurrel's decantary, Banders sees broken wood from a box and assumes it is Yasnic's confiscated effects. Thurrel corrects her: it is his own drained "retirement fund." He reveals the Fisher King says Banders is consecrated to him. Thurrel gives Banders Yasnic's gods-the "gross scorpion thing" and "a monkey got up in a bedsheet"-as a peace offering, telling her to take them to Yasnic in prison - ch 44. Banders goes to Yasnic's cell; he notes that God and the Fisher King have "been sharing a box for months" and have more in common now that both are forgotten. He says the arrests will likely mean death for all of them but offers to "work something out" - ch 44.

Yasnic is marched at the head of a roped column of prisoners, dressed in fake officer's insignia with a sign reading "Incorrect Speech" at his throat. His column is marched at a faster pace through the army so everyone can jeer and throw stones. His crime was refusing to let Pal soldiers die - ch 45.

==== The Escape from Camp (ch 46) ====
In the prisoner tent, Yasnic argues with God, who is in his box. Zenotheus offers useless paper-forgery. [[Mazdek]], as a tiny salamander, burns the hemp rope bonds linking the prisoners. Tallifer, revealed as a Priestess of the High Fane, announces: "We're getting out of here" - ch 46.

The escape column moves through camp. Lochiver plays his flute, praying to Sturge, incapacitating pursuers but making himself a target. He is shot and killed; Yasnic cannot heal him: "Another god's hand is on his brow" - ch 46. Cosserby is struck by the old wound from the retreat, dying from contingencies he coded. The group hauls him; the Sonori make their last stand. They reach the trees by evening. Cosserby is dead - ch 46.

==== The Coronation of Feder IV (ch 47-50) ====
Hiding in woodland, Yasnic works on a solution to the Fisher King's mantle problem. At dawn, he explains the Fisher King demands single combat, an axe, a severed head, and blood on the face for the mantle transfer. Yasnic reveals the loophole: gods need listeners more than people need gods; the Fisher King's preferences can be refused. Any contest of the recipient's choosing suffices. Banders calls Thurrel's transparent cheat and pricks her finger, streaking his forehead with blood. The transfer is complete - ch 47.

The night before the coronation feast, Yasnic sneaks back into the Palleseen camp disguised in a borrowed uniform to consult Mother Semprellaime about freeing Caeleen from Maserley's contract. She tells him Caeleen can live without the contract, but only Below, in the Kings' hands, where she would be sold again. Caeleen's contract is on Maserley's person, not in the strongbox. Yasnic says: "I swore an oath, and what am I for, exactly? Even God doesn't need me any more. I actually have the right to throw my life away if I want. First time ever. Nobody depending on me any more" - ch 49.

At the Wolf Palace, Yasnic returns from the army camp with Banders, disguised as a Bracite servant. He enters the hall and approaches Maserley, who has not drunk the poisoned wine. Yasnic says: "I haven't forgotten my oath." Maserley panics, forces Yasnic into the seat beside him, holds a rod under the table, and threatens to take him back to camp - ch 50. [[Caeleen]] commands Maserley to kneel, bark, and "Go home." He is compelled, barks "Woof," and flees into the Realms Below. Zenotheus crawls into Yasnic's box and switches two names on a contract, condemning Maserley to the Kings Below - ch 50. God, bound to Yasnic's ear, objects to the scheme and declares after Feder's toast: "A travesty. I have never seen such a mockery of My rites. I am done with you, Yasnic. This is the last straw" - ch 50. God abandons Yasnic and transfers to Lidlet - ch 50.

==== The Dispersal (ch 51) ====
The following morning, Yasnic watches from a high window as God rides on Lidlet's shoulder like "an ill-trained monkey," tilting a brief face back at him but not waving. God grumbles: "This is not bloody dignified. Bloody insurance. This is not respect" and "The God of used-up soldiers, who'd have thought?" Yasnic and God share a tender, profane farewell: "I'm proud too" / "Screw you as well" - ch 51. Yasnic calls himself "the opened chrysalis that a new religion had hatched from and abandoned" - ch 51.

He turns from the window to find Caeleen behind him. She confesses she is free, has the whole world, and doesn't know what to do: "I've got the world. The whole world to be wicked in. I'm the master. Nobody's chains are on me. And I don't know what to do" - ch 51. She asks to go with Yasnic. He takes her hand; they go down to join the remaining travelling companions. Yasnic decides to go into the Wood and smuggle gods - ch 51.

On the morning after the stabbing, [[Yasnic]]-known throughout the [[Fever Lodge]] as Happy Jack-takes Loret's suture while [[Tally]] operates with a glowing knife, and Gil and [[Drathel]] are driven out of the surgery chamber - ch 7. Gil, watching from outside, notices his "eerie contentment" and the crumbs he scatters that always vanish, never eaten by birds - ch 7. [[Caeleen|Caecelian 'the Viper']] touches his shoulder, and Gil feels rage at his happiness alongside her own losses - ch 7. In Kilbery's estimation the next day, Happy Jack is "just some simpleton who sat about feeding invisible birds" - ch 8.

==== The Day of Milk and Flowers ====
On the night of the Day of Milk and Flowers, while [[Ollery|Oathan]] goes to a brothel and [[Alv|The Reckoner]] discovers enjoyment after years of self-denial, [[Yasnic]] cooks a meal at the [[Fever Lodge]] and waits for [[Caeleen|Caecelian]] - ch 10. She arrives at his table with a bag of unclaimed tokens from her suitors, declaring "will await me in vain, and I will feast on their tears," and he accepts this as part of what she is - ch 10. Their arrangement is bound by what the text calls "the small print" of a deal; she is "broken, that way," and she returns to him because he alone sees her for what she is - ch 10.

==== Gorbudan on the Mirror Throne ====
Seven days after [[Gorbudan]] declares himself Alkhand, [[Yasnic]] walks across the [[Sand Lanes]] to the [[House of Hard Angles]] as a friend of its warden, admitted by the [[Moerends]] without demur; Kilbery reflects on his history-army service, an occupied city, edges "knocked away"-and his role as the Lodge's de facto ambassador - ch 17. While he is inside the prison, the [[Fever Lodge]] discusses escape options: the [[Usrani]] owe them something but not much, the [[Cotto]] "will sell us," or Jack's own plan, which [[Ollery|Oathan]] calls "an extreme option" - ch 17. A wounded Pal pimp and his Maric bodyguard are brought in and treated; the bodyguard nods as they leave - ch 17. Jack returns at the end of the chapter, does not read the room, and says the Pal woman's request "fits the plan perfectly" - ch 17. Kilbery observes that "Jack has no control over her. That's literally their deal," and that they "were, Kilbery understood, just friends" with the Warden - ch 17. Caecelian is separately noted as living with "an unnamed Maric" in the Sand Lanes - ch 19.
