In ''Days of Shattered Faith'' he is fifteen, shuffling through the Sand Lanes of Alkhalend with a bulging satchel of philtres and painkillers, running errands for a man called Oathan who is neither his father nor using his real name, and insisting to the narrative's own voice that he is "not Boy and he's not a boy." Across both books his significance lies in what his small, stubborn presence exposes: the cost of empire on the children it leaves behind, the architecture of lies that passes for family in its absence, and the question of whether a ward can ever be more than someone else's property.

His arc moves from passive object to active claimant. Under Ollery he is planned for, placed, and dispatched-sent ahead with packed bags, drummed with lists, corrected to Prassel as "not his son" even as everyone around him continues to call him the Butcher's boy. Under Oathan he is a courier and a skivvy who gambles at Taumachy dens and invents lurid backstories for the Lodge's inhabitants, already practising the small rebellions of self-naming. By the Battle for Alkhalend he is killing a Pal soldier from a rooftop with a stolen baton, refusing to leave a city he has declared his home, and forcing Oathan to lower a raised hand and, eventually, to stay. Kilbery's defining trait in ''Days of Shattered Faith'' is a fierce, adolescent insistence on personhood against every label pressed onto him. The narration states flatly: "He's fifteen. He's not Boy and he's not a boy." - ch 8. He hates the word "father" spoken for Oathan and hates the false name even more, yet calls him "father" out of habit and the simple fact that Oathan is "not his father, but all the father he had right now." - ch 17. This ambivalence-scorn for the lie coexisting with dependence on the liar-permeates his interior life.

He is inventive and performative. At the Taumachy den he fabricates lurid backstories for the Lodge's residents, naming Tally "The Knife Witch of Jarokir" and casting Oathan as a murderous brute, not realising that "now he had got out from under his lying father's shadow, he was quite the inventive little liar himself." - ch 8. He claims the shark ring Hullseer Orhuhst gave him as his own, staking ownership over the one object a stranger has recognised him for rather than as The Lodge's boy. - ch 8, ch 10.
