It serves good food and drink, and its defining social quality is that it draws patrons across every stratum of the city: smugglers and guild-factors, conjurers and soldiers, grieving widows and angry creditors all share the same tables. This permeability makes it the natural venue for intelligence contacts, unpaid-debt confrontations, and the small humiliations that set larger conflicts in motion.

Its narrative significance in ''Pretenders to the Throne Of God'' is tripartite. The Galeaff chief's grudge against Jack-that Jack "fronted" him there - ch 15-likewise lives only because the Taela's social mixing made the slight visible.
