The Angler's Eye is the great lamp and enchanted lens at the summit of the Lighthouse in Eres Ffenegh, the seat of the Fisher King cult's operations in the city. Originally sacred to the crab god and maintained as a navigational beacon beaming through fog, it is charged with sea-god glamour and holds thousands of tablethi of stored power. During the Palleseen siege of Eres Ffenegh, the Fisher King cult weaponises the Angler's Eye, converting its light into a psychic instrument that annihilates hope, love, and happiness in everything it illuminates-turning a beacon into a siege weapon that stalls the Palleseen advance and disrupts the Dead Companies summoned by the imperial Dead Emperor.

Its arc in the siege is one of escalating deployment and ultimate destruction. The cult fires the Eye at least twice to break Pal momentum, operating it through ritual charge and the means supplied by the traitor cult Os-Fferegh. The Mouth of the Sea, Anders, employs the device directly from the Lighthouse during the engagement. The Angler's Eye's final moment comes when a Pal strike shatters the chamber wall and the enchanted lens the size of a kite shield, severing it from service and nearly killing Hamriddy oa Galeaff in the blast. The destruction of the Eye removes the cult's principal defensive instrument and marks the end of the Lighthouse's role as a weapon of mass psychic harm.

What distinguishes the Angler's Eye in the wider arc of the siege is that it is one of only two forces capable of disrupting the Dead Companies-Moeribandi imperial guards sealed alive in tombs by the Emperor's promise and summoned after ten centuries. Baton-shot and blades cannot stop those dead lads; they scale walls like spiders. Only the Angler's Eye's psychic wave and Guillen oa Pedrig's recitation of a banned sea-song reach them, and the poem does what the Eye cannot: it shatters their compulsion entirely by revealing they have no home to return to.

The Object

Description

The Angler's Eye is the great lamp and enchanted lens situated at the summit of the Lighthouse, a curved-walled tower that serves as the Fisher King cult's operational seat in Eres Ffenegh - ch 8. Before its function as a navigational beacon, the lamp was sacred to the crab god, and it retains the capacity to be infused with sea-god glamour - ch 9. By the time of the siege, the lens holds at least five thousand tablethi of charge - ch 9. The structure is large enough that a single shard of its shattered glass measures the size of a kite shield - ch 27.

What It Does

The Angler's Eye's original function is that of a navigational beacon, a light beaming out through fog, referenced in the Boat Songs alongside "the face of the crab god" - ch 10. During the siege, the Fisher King cult converts it into a psychic weapon: when fired, it projects a wave that flattens hope, love, and happiness across a strip of lit ground, effective against the living and against the dead, "the dead lads worse" - ch 12. The weapon requires ritual charging to power up into what is characterised as a "nasty mess of curses" directed at Pal positions - ch 8. The traitor cult known as the Os-Fferegh supplies the means by which the Angler's Eye functions as a weapon within the city - ch 12. The Pope of Tides, head of the Fisher King cult, operates the Eye's discharge, exhausting himself in the process - ch 12. The Mouth of the Sea, Anders, aims the device from the Lighthouse during the siege engagement - ch 16. The lens is vulnerable to conventional physical force: a Pal strike explodes the chamber wall inward and destroys the lens outright - ch 27.

Provenance

The Angler's Eye was originally sacred to the crab god before its current function as a navigational beacon - ch 9. At the time of the siege it is operated by the Fisher King cult as the Lighthouse's summit apparatus - ch 8. During the siege, the Os-Fferegh supply the traitorous means that enable the Eye's weaponisation within the city - ch 12. The lens is destroyed by a Pal strike during the siege, the enchanted glass shattered and the chamber wall blown inward - ch 27.

History

Pretenders to the Throne Of God

The Angler's Eye is the great lamp at the summit of the Lighthouse, a curved-walled tower that serves as the seat of the Fisher King cult's operations in Eres Ffenegh and a structure the Pals have tried and failed to take - ch 8. Before its current function as a navigational beacon, the lamp was sacred to the crab god, and it retains the capacity to be infused with sea-god glamour; by the time of the siege it holds at least five thousand tablethi of charge - ch 9. The Boat Songs reference the Angler's Eye alongside "the face of the crab god," describing a beacon beaming out through the fog, though the chapter stops short of explicitly identifying it with the Lighthouse structure - ch 10.

During the Palleseen siege of Eres Ffenegh, the Fisher King cult weaponises the Angler's Eye, turning the beacon into a psychic device that annihilates hope, love, and happiness in those it illuminates - effective against the living and against "the dead lads worse" - ch 12. The weapon powers up via cult rituals into what is described as a "nasty mess of curses" directed at Pal positions - ch 8. The traitor cult known as the Os-Fferegh supplies the means by which the Angler's Eye functions as a weapon within the city - ch 12. When it fires, a psychic wave flattens hope and love across the lit strip of ground, and the Palleseen advance stalls briefly; Accessory 'Maric' Jack feels the city's magic "pulled out of true" - ch 12. A Helaseach conjurer shouts a message for Abellaime as the wave passes - ch 12. The Pope of Tides, head of the Fisher King cult, is said to have "used up his best angry looks" after the Eye's discharge - ch 12.

The Angler's Eye fires a second time, and the Fisher King's cult god is "sated" - ch 12. Guillen oa Pedrig strides to the barricade and recites an old banned sea-song; the Dead Companies stop, and after his final verse a shot kills him. The dead remain motionless, "something merciless and purposeful" leaving them - ch 12. Cohort-Broker Istreddy reports to Cohort-Monitor Aspel that the Dead Companies reacted to the Angler's Eye "like they were... remembering" - ch 12. The Dead Companies are Moeribandi imperial guards sealed alive in tombs by the Emperor's promise, called after ten centuries by the Dead Emperor; the Angler's Eye disturbed them, but Guillen oa Pedrig's poem shattered their compulsion by revealing they had no home to return to - ch 12. Only the Angler's Eye and Guillen's poem disrupt the Dead Companies; baton-shot and blades cannot kill them, and they scale walls like spiders - ch 12.

Anders employs the Angler's Eye during the siege engagement in her capacity as the Mouth of the Sea, aiming the device from the Lighthouse - ch 16. The enchanted lens at the top of the Lighthouse through which the Fisher King's power is focused is ultimately cracked and ruined by a Pal strike: the chamber wall explodes inward, a shard of glass the size of a kite shield cuts Hamriddy oa Galeaff nearly in two, and the lens is destroyed - ch 27.
