In the Palleseen military system these inhabited landmasses serve as living transport vessels, conveying battalions across open sky to imperial destinations while their civilian residents maintain daily subsistence beneath the army's passage. The people who live on Galletes are bound to this service by the Palleseen Sway, a constitutional arrangement that compels their labour and hospitality to the empire's logistical machine without apparent consent.

In House of Open Wounds, Gallete appears in two functionally opposed states: first as airborne conveyance carrying the Forthright Battalion across the sky, then as a grounded island pressed into use as a military encampment and administrative seat. The transition from one state to the other displaces the island's civilian population from their role as hosts of aerial transit into passive subjects of occupation, their homes requisitioned, their sky-trade halted.
