Porvilleau

Porvilleau is a master of geography and cartography at the Gownhall in Allorwen, one of the resident academic staff whose institutional position places him at the centre of the city's deliberations during the Palleseen siege. His appearances are few and confined to scenes of faculty council, but within those scenes he fulfils a specific and unmistakable narrative function: he is the voice that speaks last, and what he says is always the acknowledgement that the room has been circling but not yet spoken aloud. In the early stages of the siege he warns his colleagues that the students cannot be held back indefinitely, a sentence whose quiet finality falls in silence and chills the common room. By the siege's end he has become the Gownhall's mouthpiece to the besieging army, carrying the Palleseen terms of unconditional surrender into the faculty's last deliberation and thereby removing the last discretionary choice the masters might have made.

His arc across City of Last Chances is a movement from internal adviser to external herald. In the common room he debates with Maestro Vorkovin, Maestra Gowdi, and the institution's mathematician whether to resist or to wait, and his intervention is cautious, practical, and unwelcome. In the concluding scenes, when Gowdi insists they will all be killed and the faculty weighs sending a delegation under a flag of truce, Porvilleau does not argue; he announces. The flat recitation of Palleseen conditions he delivers-unconditional surrender, the requirement that leaders come out-functions as the formal extinguishing of the Gownhall's remaining autonomy, and it is Porvilleau's voice that performs that extinguishing. He does not judge the terms, does not resist them, and does not soften them. That absence of editorialising is itself the text's most pointed characterisation of him.
