The woman with the filed teeth is a Cotto champion described as "beloved of the sea," whose sole appearance in the series occurs during a sea-rite performed in the hold of a ship in the Water Lanes. There she paints Loret in red and black patterns, drives a permanent ink flourish into her shoulder, and flicks a hallucinogenic hus into her eyes, transforming Loret's perception of the ritual and the other participants.

Her significance to the series rests entirely on that single act of marking. The ink flourish she places on Loret's skin is not ornament but claim: Loret, recalling the ceremony in flashback, understands it as a binding, an act of being taken rather than blessed. Loret recalls the marking as being done "like she was claimed by them." She also flicks hus - a hallucinogen - into Loret's eyes, which sharpens Loret's sight until she perceives "souls" and a quality of sacredness radiating from the other participants. The entire episode is narrated in flashback from Loret's later perspective, framing the rite as an event she understood only in retrospect - Days of Shattered Faith, ch 40.
