Rathbridge

The Rathbridge is a ruined crossing on the north bank of the river in Ilmar, long and dangerous, once maintained as a ceremonial approach by the Duke and nobility before their evacuation to Armigine Hill after the Occupation. By the garrison raid that ends the book, the bridge has fallen into such disrepair that it is dilapidated, overgrown, and structurally treacherous-a ghost of its former grandeur, serving no one.

It matters to the series as the killing ground of Vidsya Sirovar, whose death in transit transforms the bridge from a forgotten infrastructure into the site of the novel's most consequential loss. When the Portbridge is blocked by a festive procession, Vidsya is forced to divert the coach carrying Shantrov Sirovar toward the Rathbridge; the coachman, accelerating dangerously, swerves onto the ruined structure, and it is there that the madman strikes. Vidsya dies on the bridge, driving Shantrov out of the city to keep him safe from the raid.

The Rathbridge's arc across the single book is an inversion of purpose: a ceremonial crossing abandoned to rot, then pressed back into service at the worst possible moment, its ruin converting a long detour into a death trap. The coach's route through the Gutter Districts, across the Portbridge and the Rathbridge, terminates in the ruins of the Reproach on the north bank, so the bridge functions as the last man-made structure on a path that ends in rubble.
