The Ducal Guard was the pre-occupation law-enforcement authority in Ilmar, the city-state at the centre of the Occupiers' domain in the tyrant-philosophers series. It appears in the narrative only as a retrospective reference in City of Last Chances, where Mother Guame recalls that the Guard had conducted a house visit to her dwelling before the Occupiers themselves began shaking down the same residence on three separate occasions. Though no officer is named and no operational structure is described, the Guard's sole appearance serves a specific narrative function: it establishes that surveillance, intrusion, and the routine harassment of private citizens were features of Ilmari civic life even before the occupation, complicating any simple moral binary between the former sovereign government and the new occupiers.
Its arc across the series is entirely historical and offscreen. The Guard existed, carried out its functions, and was superseded by the Occupiers' own apparatus of coercion, leaving no living officer to speak for its methods or justify them.
