The operatives who carry out these procedures are drawn from the Palleseen military apparatus and remain, in the official record and in the memories of those who receive the finished weapons, largely anonymous: a team of functionaries defined by their task rather than their names.
One such team performed the decanting of the sword of Conn Leachan, a weapon of extraordinary significance in the ongoing conflict. That small group is the only point at which these operatives surface in the surviving account, recalled not as participants in a scene but as the subject of a single soldier's memory: the hands that unmade the sword's old binding and the face - a "weaselly Pal" among them - that a young officer could not later forget. Their entire recorded existence is operational and retrospective; they are the machinery between the capture of a weapon and its redeployment, and they never step forward as characters in their own right.
