Aeriff ea Llannach is the chief conjurer of the Helaseach and the siblingry's designated representative on the Osseach, the governing council of Eres Ffenegh. She is the political voice of the conjurer community and, by that office, the institutional counterweight to the Pandaemonium and its proprietor Abellaime - a rivalry that is mutual, deep, and rooted in the Helaseach's coveting of the power Abellaime once demonstrated against them. Her prior dealings with the sorcerer Varinecthes have collapsed entirely; he will not speak to her, and the delegations she sent him go unanswered. She is, at the outset of the Palleseen siege, a figure of established authority: the woman to whom the council turns for magical assessments of the city's defences, the senior conjurer stationed at the walls when the assault comes, the one who must animate the Gaeledh when every other option has failed.
Her arc across the siege is one of progressive hollowing. Each institution she draws her authority from - the Osseach, the conjurer siblingry, the demonic hierarchy of the Kings Below - proves unreliable or absent when it matters most. She deflects responsibility onto Niev ea Galeaff's informal command, reports to a woman who holds no formal authority, watches the Kings Below refuse to answer her summons, and admits she does not understand why. The instruction proves insufficient; the living Palleseen infantry takes the barricade over the dead's refusal to advance - ch 12.
With the third wall effectively lost and no time to seek Hamriddy's formal permission, Niev ea Galeaff authorises Aeriff to activate the Gaeledh embedded in the foundations of the Taela - ch 12. Aeriff leads the ritual to animate the Taela's stones, which rise as a writhing tentacled mass, smashing the Palleseen barricade and forcing a retreat; the Dead Companies stand motionless afterward, "exuding that curious sense of the forlorn" - ch 12. Throughout the authorisation, Aeriff defers the decision to Niev's authority, insisting that Niev bear the blame - ch 12.
The Peace Talks at the Pandaemonium
Aeriff's presence during the surrender negotiations is brief and reactive. In Abellaime's private reflections on her rivalries and seniority, Aeriff is named as one whose standing the Widow implicitly measures herself against - ch 17. During the arrival of the Palleseen delegation at the Pandaemonium, Aeriff is present as part of the Carcer side; the narrator registers her only as a woman who "stank of magic" - ch 18.
At the siege talks in the Pandaemonium's talks room, Brandery bludgeons the Osseach delegation - which includes Hamriddy, Niev, and Aeriff - with demands for reparations, punitive fines, the removal of the Gaeledh from the walls, and the surrender of named Os-Fferegh - ch 21. When Brandery insists the Gaeledh be stripped from the city's defences, Aeriff says only "No" - ch 21. The talks collapse moments later when the Pope of Tides announces that a Fisher King fleet has arrived and is shelling the Palleseen camp - ch 21.
The Final Assault at the Gaelensreach
On the final day of the siege, with the Palleseen having chewed through the Left-city to the gates of the Gaelensreach, Niev ea Galeaff rallies the Helaseach and militia in the gardens behind the wall. She orders Aeriff to summon every demon available and prepare to bring the wall down on the besiegers - ch 41. The Helaseach's demon-summoning circles go unanswered. The Kings Below refuse. Aeriff tells Niev they have only the wall - ch 41. The narration marks this moment bitterly: "The last words you want to hear from your chief wizard in the middle of a war." - ch 41.
