The Hammer Districts are the factory quarter of Ilmar, the engine-room of the Palleseen occupation's war machine. They matter to the series as the birthplace and nerve-centre of the Siblingries labour movement: it is here that the strike organised under the name "Wield the Hammer" is planned, here that the Pal crackdown provokes open revolt, and here that the machinery of occupation-bound demons slaved to presses and foundries-is finally destroyed. Their arc across the two books traces a full cycle from exploited industrial zone to shattered aftermath, and then, in House of Open Wounds, to a landscape of accumulated junkyard ruin through which a former child beggar once walked.
The Districts are singular in the world of the series for their use of bound demons as motive power, a practice that makes the Siblingries' conjurer-members indispensable and forces the Occupiers' patrols into a wary, uneasy coexistence with organised labour.
