Istreddy
Cohort-Broker Istreddy is a Diviner and Lycanthropist attached to the Palleseen siege camp outside Eres Ffenegh, a member of the informal officers' coterie known as the Heretics alongside Companion-Invigilator Quellery, Cohort-Monitor Aspel, and Cohort-Monitor Lovern. A scarred, low-voiced orphan who lost his original spine and legs in a Faraslandi uprising and received them through a Divination deal, Istreddy carries on his face the tooth-and-claw wounds of his earlier service in the Archipelago death squads, where the Commission sent him as a "monster" to slaughter his own kind after regular infantry refused to fire on their countrymen. He matters to Pretenders to the Throne Of God as the figure who most fully embodies the Commission's logic of the "imperfect": first a useful oracle whose unpopularity with superiors cost him nothing but standing, then a soldier stripped of his cards and stitched into a new uniform because the war no longer needs his divination but needs a werewolf at the front. His death-shot dead by Palleseen soldiers during the final assault while fighting in lupine form-closes the arc that the Commission's own reasoning set in motion: a man made monstrous, used monstrous, and killed monstrous.
Across the single book in which he appears, Istreddy moves from a functioning but marginal specialist performing card divinations in Brandery's command tent, through a combat breakdown that nearly kills him and is witnessed by Sage-Monitor Dantell, to a quiet redeployment as a living weapon. His loyalties remain fixed not on the Commission or the Palleseen state but on the three officers who call him "Izzy" and whom he calls his siblings. In the end he defects with them, waits out the battle in the Pandaemonium, and transforms to fight his own countrymen, dying in the open while Quellery mourns and Aspel grieves in silence. His body is committed to the sea.
Character
Appearance
Istreddy's face is described by Quellery as "like scarred knuckles" - ch 4. He bears visible dagger-tooth scars across his features, the product of fighting his own kind during the Archipelago death squads - ch 19. His body has been rebuilt through a Divination deal: a new spine and legs replaced those shot through in Farasland - ch 19. He speaks in a low voice that Quellery turned into a running joke - ch 35. In the final chapter he is provided with a special uniform stitched with seams designed to part when the wearer transforms into a Lycanthropist beast - ch 35.
Personality
Istreddy gambles conservatively despite possessing sight "elsewhen," a trait Quellery notes with dry amusement - ch 8. He is plainspoken about his own fragility: when Aspel probes what is wrong with him, he states simply, "I had... a breakdown. We can say it. It was too much," without evasion or self-pity - ch 16. He withdraws after that episode, leaving silences that Aspel fills for him - ch 16. Yet he is fiercely protective of the Heretics coterie, telling Aspel and Lovern he loves them "like the siblings I never had" and counselling them to seize whatever pleasure the business allows - ch 19. He withholds information from superiors when he judges it necessary, delivering card readings that withhold what else he saw - ch 28. Dantell considers him "ideologically problematic" and "indefensible" in the eyes of an inquisitor - ch 28. He reports his divination fits directly to Brandery regardless of protocol, a habit that "didn't make him popular with his superiors" - ch 4. He fears the Old Cause - ch 35.
Beliefs & Motivations
Istreddy's central conviction is that the Commission made him a monster and then required him to do "monster work" against the very people he might otherwise have been - the regulars who refused to fire on their own. "They'd made us monsters and here was monster work," he recalls - ch 35. He accepts the Commission's logic of imperfection without illusion: We're imperfect. That's half of it - ch 35. His loyalty is not to the state or the army but to the three people in his tent. He reports what his divinations show even when it is unwelcome, and he withholds what he judges dangerous - a balance he maintains until the Commission stops asking for his cards and starts asking for his teeth - ch 28, ch 35.
History
Pretenders to the Throne Of God
The Arrival of the Dead Companies
Cohort-Broker Istreddy is a Diviner and Lycanthropist in the Palleseen siege camp outside Eres Ffenegh, described by Companion-Invigilator Quellery as having a face "like scarred knuckles" - ch 4. He belongs to the informal coterie of Palleseen officers known as the Heretics, a name reclaimed during the Loruthi war as a joke "for someone whose irrational beliefs were different from your irrational beliefs" - ch 4. During a game of Tevits in the forward camp, Istreddy folds conservatively while Quellery talks throughout and accumulates debts that would "break the Heretics wide open" - ch 4. At the end of a hand, his scarred face spasms and the temperature drops; Quellery says "Don't," but Istreddy bolts outside, compelled by a divination fit to report directly to Brandery - ch 4. The narration notes that "it didn't make him popular with his superiors" - ch 4. Cohort-Monitor Lovern grabs Istreddy's cloak and chases him downslope toward Brandery's tent, calling him "Izzy" - ch 4.
When reinforcements arrive at the camp, Istreddy performs an elaborate card divination - a Loruthi innovation - in Brandery's command tent on whether the newly arrived force can be used for the siege. The answer is yes, with a shelf-life - ch 6. Dantell advises Brandery they can use the newcomers "with considerable care, and to a point," and Dantell is noted as someone who understands and values his divinatory work despite its unpopularity - ch 6.
- implied, ch 6: The divination's answer regarding the newly arrived force resolves the question raised in ch 4 about whether Higher Orders would restart the assault; the divination instead concerns the usability of the Dead Companies.
The Osseach Meeting at the Pandaemonium
Anders, operating covertly as the Mouth of the Sea, visits the Heretics' tent in the Pal forward camp. Inside, Quellery works at his chalked circle, Cohort-Monitor Aspel is buried in artillerist-and-magic calculations, and Istreddy is making tea - ch 8. The narration describes him as "a bad gambler despite his sight 'elsewhen,'" and notes he was formerly attached to Correct Exchange - ch 8. Anders hands over Lancewort Specials for Aspel and brings out Bile of the Earth, and the small group discusses the quarantined "Unnaturals" troops - ch 8.
The Day of the Three Walls
At the forward camp, Dantell assigns Istreddy to the quartermasters with his "fast deck of cards" to distribute tablethi and medical supplies, while Lovern's breachers are held in reserve and Quellery and Aspel are assigned to artillery duty - ch 11. Dantell refers to the four of them as "Quellery's troublemakers," an informal officers' club of "reprobates" who "didn't fit anywhere else" - ch 11.
During the three-wall assault, Istreddy assists Aspel with calculations and reports to Quellery that the Dead Companies reacted to the Angler's Eye "like they were... remembering" - ch 12. He warns Quellery of the Lich Queen's arrival by repeating his name, but Quellery ignores the warning until too late - ch 12. Under the extreme stress of the battle, Istreddy transforms into a lupine beast; Aspel throws herself on his transforming body and calls his name until he shrinks back - ch 12. Dantell nearly shoots both of them, then contemplates how Correct Speech will condemn everything she has witnessed - ch 12.
- implied, ch 12: The question of whether Correct Speech or the Commission will act on what Dantell witnessed regarding Istreddy's lycanthropy remains open; Dantell's contemplation of the political danger is noted but no action is taken.
The Palleseen Ultimatum
In the Heretics' tent, Anders sits in for Quellery at a game of Cross, paired with Lovern against Istreddy and Aspel. Istreddy is withdrawn; Aspel forces conversation to fill the gaps he leaves - ch 16. Anders asks what is wrong with him. Aspel explains he had a breakdown during the siege when the Carcers destroyed two engines with a warding; they were right there - ch 16. Istreddy confirms plainly: "I had," Istreddy pronounced quietly, "a breakdown. We can say it. It was too much." He describes losing control amid the blood-smell and chaos, and implies this relates to a condition that worsens "in the skin" - ch 16. Aspel is noted as loyal to Istreddy, having stood beside him during the episode - ch 16.
- implied, ch 16: The question of what exactly Istreddy's "thing" is receives partial resolution: the notes confirm the condition relates to his Lycanthropist transformation worsening "in the skin," and that the blood-smell and chaos of combat trigger loss of control, but the precise mechanism is not further specified.
The Peace Talks at the Pandaemonium
The chapter narrates Istreddy's background: an orphan, garrisoned in Farasland during an uprising, shot through the spine by a friendly baton; he received a new spine and legs through a Divination deal, and moved out of the Lycanthropists before their disbandment, which saved his life when his old squad became "a risk to perfection" - ch 19. He retains visible dagger-tooth scars on his face from his Lycanthropist service - ch 19. At a circle house in Eres Ffenegh, Istreddy claps both Aspel and Lovern on the shoulders and advises them: "Take it from someone who has ten years more and half a face less than either of you, get your jollies where you can in this business. I love the pair of you like the siblings I never had, but it's not been roses up to now and it won't be tomorrow." - ch 19. Quellery calls him "Izzy" and offers him "choice specimens of mortal flesh" - ch 19. At the Pandaemonium itself, Quellery and Istreddy enjoy "straightforward evenings" while Aspel is mortified by the service and sends away staff - ch 21.
- implied, ch 19: The question of why each of the four Specialists is at the front line rather than in safe postings is resolved for Istreddy: his medical discharge and reassignment from the Lycanthropists placed him in a specialist role at the siege rather than a garrison posting.
The Assault on the Lighthouse
In the Heretics' tent, Istreddy is playing cards alone when Dantell enters and orders him out; he leaves after a tense exchange, having asked "How are the dead, magister?" - confirming that Dantell's secret regarding the Dead Companies is common knowledge among the Heretics - ch 23. Dantell privately considers him "at least part dog" and notes he represents "two different flavours of imperfection" - ch 23. Later, Dantell orders Aspel to fetch Lovern and Istreddy so they can model an artillery solution with Istreddy's cards: "Go fetch Lovern. Actually, fetch Lovern and Istreddy. We may as well model this in the cards." - ch 23. Istreddy's cards are used alongside Aspel's numbers in calculating the forbidden artillery pattern that breaches the city walls - ch 25.
The Culling Lists
Istreddy arrives at Dantell's rooftop position and performs a card reading confirming that the link between the city and the sea is severed, meaning Lovern's mission through the Wood succeeded - ch 28. His grim delivery suggests he saw more than he reported; Dantell notes he "withholds what else he saw" and considers him "ideologically problematic" and "indefensible" if an inquisitor asks - ch 28. Passing through the forward camp, Dantell notices the three remaining Heretics (Istreddy, Quellery, Aspel) watching her with collective distrust - ch 28.
- implied, ch 28: The question of whether Lovern's mission succeeded is resolved by Istreddy's reading: "What links the city to the sea is severed." The question of what else Istreddy saw in the cards remains open.
At dusk, Istreddy enters the Heretics' tent carrying a new uniform stitched with special seams that part when the wearer transforms into a Lycanthropist beast, along with a notice redeploying him to the front as a monster for the living advance. "They don't need the cards any more, they say," he reports. "They made me a special," Istreddy said tonelessly. "For the assault." - ch 35. He states the Commission's logic: "We're imperfect. That's half of it." He tells Aspel she will be kept for her engines, that Quellery's demons will last "another few turns of the glass," but the Specialists who took techniques from the Allorwen will eventually be rolled up - ch 35.
A flashback memory triggered by Aspel's recollection surfaces Istreddy's Archipelago past: the regulars refused to fire on their own, so the Lycanthropists were sent as "monster work"; Istreddy fought his own kind, earned tooth-and-claw scars, and was redirected to divination in Correct Exchange - ch 35. In the memory, the reasoning is stated: "They sent in the regulars. But that was bad blood. Some units refused. Too many faces there they knew. Comrades, people like us. The death squads marched in loyal and came out traitor, came out faithful even. So they sent us. Because they knew we were monsters. They'd made us monsters and here was monster work." - ch 35. Quellery, who had urged Istreddy not to come home, mourns when the news lands. Aspel, who "just knew the numbers and had never really looked at what the end result of any given equation added to, or more often subtracted from, the world," unexpectedly utters a moral refusal: "No." - ch 35.
- implied, ch 35: The question of why the new uniform was made is resolved: he is being redeployed as a Lycanthropist because the Commission no longer needs his divination but needs a monster. The question of what the scars on his face are is resolved: they are tooth-and-claw wounds from fighting his own kind during the Archipelago death squads.
The Challenge to the Lich Queen
Istreddy is present among the five defected Palleseen officers who enter the Upper Parlour of the Pandaemonium with Anders past midnight, the night before the final assault - ch 36. He says "The camps," stands silent through Lovern's apology to the table, and is identified as someone who will be killed "because of what he is" - ch 36.
The Final Assault at the Gaelensreach
At dawn on the morning of the final assault, Dantell reflects on the absence of Quellery, Istreddy, and Aspel, who have left camp by boat - ch 40. In the Pandaemonium, Istreddy waits out the assault alongside Quellery, Lovern, and Aspel while Valkazar teaches Aspel the mathematics of the Sable Manor's binding - ch 41. When the Palleseen breach the Pandaemonium, Istreddy transforms into a werewolf and fights his own countrymen; he is shot dead - ch 41. Quellery mourns - ch 41.
- implied, ch 41: The question of whether Quellery warned Prassel is not addressed in Istreddy's final scene; the question of where the Heretics went before the assault is resolved in ch 40 (they left by boat) and ch 41 (they are in the Pandaemonium).
The following day, the dead are sent to the sea: Istreddy and Lovern among them. Quellery rages at the lighthouse; Aspel grieves inwardly; Anders weeps for Lovern - ch 42. The Fisher King is said to attend the passage of the cult's fallen past the Lighthouse - ch 42.
- implied, ch 42: The question of what happens to Istreddy's body after he is shot dead is resolved: his body is committed to the sea alongside Lovern's.
