Dorae

Dorae is an Allorwen antiques dealer operating in Mirror Allor, the Allorwen quarter of Ilmar, whose small trade in forged cabinet-work and old objects makes them one of dozens of ordinary tradespeople caught in the machinery of Palleseen occupation. Seized and beaten by occupation soldiers alongside their business partner Tobriant and the rebel Fyon, Dorae is sentenced to hang in the Donjon yard and is marched to the scaffold in the Donjon yard alongside Maestro Ivarn Ostravar, the Indweller prisoners, and a student girl. The execution, however, is a theatrical forgery arranged by Blackmane: the drop is faked, the condemned are spirited beneath the Anchorage, and Dorae wakes among corpses in a cellar with the knowledge that they are legally dead and must flee Ilmar forever - ch 21, ch 26, ch 29.

Dorae's significance to the series lies in the vantage they provide on occupation from below: not a philosopher, not a rebel commander, not a scholar, but a man who has been quietly hiding resistance fighters in the back room of his shop while telling himself he is merely "a dealer in old tat" - ch 26. Their arc is compressed into a single harrowing sequence spanning three chapters - arrest, scaffold, faked death, flight - yet it crystallises the lived experience of the Allorwen under Palleseen rule: the routine brutality, the social stratification that would bar a tradesman from speaking to an academic even at the moment of death, and the fragile community bonds that Blackmane stitches together to shepherd seventeen refugees through the Anchorwood into the unknown.

Character

Personality

Dorae's first instinct under arrest is practical and self-preserving: in the cell they prepare "arguments, inducements, and bribes" in the expectation of talking their way out of a hanging by insisting they are nothing more than a dealer in curiosities - ch 26. Yet this is not cowardice so much as the reflex of a man who has spent a career navigating the margins of an occupied city. Beneath the surface compliance runs a stubborn moral current: Dorae has been hiding resistance fighters and fugitives in the back room of his shop, a fact they do not raise at the scaffold but which the narrative records as plainly as any other detail - ch 26. At the moment of execution Dorae reaches across the social gulf that Ilmar's class structure enforces even among the condemned, offering Ostravar a quiet "It'll be all right," and in the instant before the drop whispers the single word "Please" - ch 26.

Among the Allorwen refugees gathered at the Anchorage, Dorae shows the wariness of a beaten man: when Jem asks them to descend to a hidden cellar, they refuse, not trusting her - ch 42. This is not obstinacy but the prudence of someone who has already learned that authority in Ilmar means violence, and who will not move on a stranger's word alone.

Beliefs & Motivations

Dorae operates a trade built on deception - selling Tobriant's forged cabinet-work under false pedigrees - yet draws a clear moral line around who deserves protection. They are certain Tobriant is "blamelessly honest" and "wouldn't even age a fake," distinguishing the forgery of objects from the forgery of people, and they extend trust and practical shelter to those resisting occupation even while presenting themselves to soldiers as harmless - ch 26. They say "thank you" to Palleseen guards out of ingrained habit, a reflex of subservience that sits alongside a private understanding that "the Pals had some kind of wasp in their ear right now, and as usual, they were taking it out on the Allorwen" - ch 26. Their deepest loyalty is communal rather than political: they accept Blackmane's authority as a community elder, take the ritual wards he provides, and join the group heading for the Anchorwood without argument, choosing collective survival over the life they built in Mirror Allor - ch 29, ch 36.

History

City of Last Chances

The Healing of Ruslav

Dorae is an Allorwen antiques dealer operating in Mirror Allor, where they maintain a shop indistinguishable from Blackmane's pawnbrokerage and through which Tobriant's forged cabinet-work circulates under false pedigrees - ch 21. They are seized by Palleseen Occupation forces and beaten, as are Tobriant and Fyon, because "plenty of the Occupation force had done a turn in Allor and built up a solid head of prejudice" - ch 21. A day and a half after Lemya, Ruslav, and Yasnic are thrown into Correct Speech's converted wine-cellar cells beneath the Donjon, Dorae and Tobriant are brought in alongside Fyon, filling every alcove and confirming to Ivarn Ostravar that Hegelsy's people are now searching Mirror Allor for the warding bundle - ch 21.

The Hanging at the Donjon

The following morning, Dorae is marched to the scaffold in the Donjon yard, having spent their cell-time preparing arguments, inducements, and bribes in the expectation of talking their way out as merely "a dealer in old tat" - ch 26. Tobriant protests his innocence - "I just make cabinets and chairs!" - and is cuffed, tripped, kicked, and shoulder-twisted by guards; Dorae believes him blamelessly honest, certain he "wouldn't even age a fake," while Dorae himself has been hiding resistance fighters and fugitives in his shop's back room - ch 26. The executioner Hoyst is grotesquely solicitous, offering Dorae silk rope he has paid for - "Is that comfy, sir? The silk, as requested" - and fitting each noose with a tailor's attention - ch 26. Dorae surveys the condemned row: Ivarn Ostravar stands tall and dignified, Fyon the Shrike is on Dorae's left, an unnamed student girl shuffles beside Fyon, the Indweller prisoner does not seem to understand what is happening, and Yasnic stands meek and miserable with his head down - ch 26. Dorae realises the crowd has gathered for Yasnic and Ostravar, not the others, and leans to read the sign at Yasnic's neck in Pel: Healer / Your healer - ch 26. Blackmane is visible in the crowd as "a little mountain in the crowd's sea," nodding to Dorae and Tobriant while fixing Ostravar with a "keen needle of a stare" - ch 26. In the final moments before the drop, Dorae addresses Ostravar across the social divide - "It'll be all right" - and Ostravar, after a flash of outrage at being spoken to by a tradesman, replies: "Will it? Ah well, I'm reassured then" - ch 26. When the baton falls for the fifth time and Hoyst's trusties haul the levers in unison, Dorae whispers "Please" and drops, strangling, into the void - ch 26.

The Rescue from the Donjon

Dorae survives the fall. They wake in a cellar strewn with corpses beneath the Anchorage, alongside Ruslav, Yasnic, Fyon, Tobriant, a vacant Indweller, and Ivarn Ostravar - the trapdoor drop having been faked by Blackmane, who bribed Hoyst with the Old Duke's cursed rope - ch 29. Blackmane speaks to Dorae and Tobriant in Allorwen as a community elder: they are legally dead, their families are arriving with money, and he provides them with ritual wards - string wrapped around sticks and herbs, decorated with trinkets and charms, forest-wards made by the Indwellers, vanishingly rare and expensive - for crossing the Anchorwood - ch 29. In the second cellar of the Anchorage, Dorae sits watching Ivarn brood alongside Hellgram, Tobriant, and the unmasked Indweller; when Langrice dismisses Ivarn's self-importance, he rages at Tobriant and Dorae for being Allorwen outsiders who "didn't even belong here in his city" - ch 31.

The Last Calm Night

Dorae is among the seventeen Allorwen refugees gathered at Mother Guame's brothel who require passage through the Anchorwood, one of them pressing a hand to a bruised eye - ch 36. Blackmane declares seventeen ill-omened and demands one family stay behind before leading the group toward the Anchorage past Palleseen troops mustering at the Wood's edge - ch 36. Inside the Anchorage, Langrice confirms the Wood will open that night, and Hellgram escorts the refugees to a hidden cellar beneath the hidden cellar - ch 36.

Hellgram's War

The Allorwen, including Dorae, sit anxious in the Anchorage taproom without Blackmane and their ritual wards; when Jem asks them to descend to the cellar, they refuse, not trusting her - ch 42. Hellgram observes them among the taproom's occupants while carving healing sigils into his own forearm - ch 42.

The Reproach Breaks Free

Dorae is present with Blackmane's group of nineteen fugitives sheltering in the Anchorage taproom, which is crowded with students, Gownhall academics, Hammer District people, and Allorwen refugees - ch 47. After God partially heals the dying Shantrov Sirovar and Lemya, and the Indwellers depart into the Wood, Langrice hammers the bar and announces "The Wood's open," placing the warding bundle on the counter; the Allorwen, students, factory people, and Ivarn Ostravar prepare to go through, while Blackmane decides to stay in Ilmar - ch 47. - implied, ch 47: the question of whether Dorae and the other Allorwen survive to cross into the Wood is resolved by their departure through the opened Wood alongside the students and workers.

Relationships

  • Tobriant - Business partners in the forged-pedigree trade: Dorae's antiques shop is the front through which Tobriant's cabinet-work circulates - ch 21. On the scaffold Dorae is convinced of Tobriant's innocence and wishes he could grip the man's fingers in a last moment of solidarity; the two survive together and are addressed as a pair by Blackmane when their new legal deaths are announced - ch 26, ch 29.
  • Blackmane - Peripherally in the same trade - Dorae's shop is "indistinguishable from Blackmane's pawnbrokerage" - and recognisably part of the same Allorwen community - ch 21. Blackmane nods to Dorae and Tobriant from the crowd at the scaffold, then later speaks to them in Allorwen as a community elder, declaring them legally dead, providing forest-wards, and directing them toward the Anchorwood - ch 26, ch 29.
  • Maestro Ivarn Ostravar - Strangers placed side by side on the condemned row, divided by every social wall Ilmar recognises: "as though there should be separate lynchings for respectable academics and Allorwen tradesmen." Dorae offers comfort; Ostravar receives it with wry incredulity. Later, in the Anchorage cellars, Ivarn rages at Dorae and Tobriant for being Allorwen outsiders who "didn't even belong here in his city," a bitterness Dorae absorbs without response - ch 26, ch 31.
  • Fyon - Fellow prisoner from the Mirror Allor roundup, shared cell in the wine-cellar, and fellow condemned on the scaffold; Fyon stands on Dorae's left at the drop and wakes beside them in the cellar beneath the Anchorage - ch 21, ch 26, ch 29.
  • Mirror Allor - Dorae's home and livelihood: "one of half a street" of dealers who knows some Donjon guards by name. The seizure of Dorae, Tobriant, and Fyon confirms to Ivarn Ostravar that the Correct Speech Inquirers are now searching Mirror Allor specifically for the warding bundle - ch 21, ch 26.
