Companion-Archivist Nasely is a twenty-year-old scholar-secretary attached to the School of Correct Erudition in occupied Ilmar, serving as personal aide to Sage-Archivist Ochelby, the head of that institution. She is the series' entry point into the Anchorwood and the Reproach: a young functionary dragged past the last rational boundary of the city, hunted for chapters by a beast she cannot kill, and ultimately delivered dead into the hands of the Indwellers whose guilt over her killing reverberates through the novel's final third. Her brief, violent arc crystallises the book's central horror-that the institutional protections of the Schools of the Divinat mean nothing against what the Wood and the Reproach do to a person.

Her significance is structural rather than heroic. Nasely never fights, never commands, and never makes a political choice; she is the body that Ochelby tries to shield himself with, the scream that Shrievsby hears too late, the accidental gunshot victim, the corpse the beast drags through the Gutter Districts as an offering. Yet her death sets the plot in motion: her stolen warding bundle becomes the object of a city-wide search, her file on mind-emptied victims is consulted in the Donjon investigation, and the Indweller prisoner who killed her-or is implied to have killed her-shivers in the adjacent cell when her name is spoken. She is the small, expendable life around which the larger machinery of guilt, cover-up, and magical contamination grinds.

Personality

Nasely is cautious, anxious, and painfully aware of the limits of her position. She objects to Ochelby's plan to cross the Anchorwood, watching the trees from the taproom of the Anchorage and finding them opaque and wrong - ch 2. Her unease is vindicated within hours, but even after the initial attack she is left to survive alone in the Reproach, where her principal response is to hoard and embezzle expedition funds to buy charms and amulets for self-protection, an act that reads as both pragmatic and desperate - ch 17. Under extreme stress she reverts to old Maric, a language of her scholarly training, mixing it with Pel in broken, alternating speech as though the two grammars have fused - ch 18. Even in the act of being physically rescued she laughs and cries out a courtly pleasantry in Maric, suggesting a mind that reaches for the language of the archive when terror overwhelms the living tongue - ch 18.

Beliefs & Motivations

Nasely's driving concern throughout her two surviving chapters is simple survival, and she pursues it through the only lever available to a secretary: money spent on wards, and physical flight when wards fail. She trusts no institutional authority to protect her once Ochelby's own baton proves useless and his instinct is to use her as a shield - ch 2. Her embezzlement of expedition funds for protective charms is, within the logic of the Reproach, the most rational decision any character makes - ch 17.

The Murder of the Sage-Archivist

Nasely is a twenty-year-old Companion-Archivist serving as secretary to Sage-Archivist Ochelby, the head of the School of Correct Erudition in occupied Ilmar. She accompanies him to the Anchorage on the outskirts of the city, where he intends to cross the Anchorwood under escort from the Indwellers on a "formal embassy from Pallesand" to Scrymisa and other lands beyond the Wood - a journey he undertook against her wishes - ch 17. Nasely watches the trees from the taproom, unable to see through them, and is clearly uneasy about the crossing - ch 2.

When the Anchorwood beasts attack the party inside the Wood, Ochelby's warding bundle has been swapped for a straw doll, and his baton shots leave "char but no scar" on the predators - ch 2. In the panic, Ochelby's instinct is to use his secretary as a shield: "He looked for his secretary, because if he could thrust her in front of him, he'd win himself a moment's more life" - ch 2. Nasely flees "along the path back," already "half lost in the trees, heading down that inexplicable thread that led back" - ch 2. Ochelby staggers after her, crying "Go after her! Look, there she goes! She's escaping you! Take her, not me!" at the beast, which bites him in half - ch 2. Nasely survives the return journey through the Anchorwood, though her subsequent entrapment in the Reproach - a cursed district within Ilmar itself - is not accounted for in the chapter - implied, ch 2.

The Assembly of the Reproach Expedition

Nasely is trapped in the Reproach, hiding in a top-floor window of an impossible palace walled in turquoise, gold, and chalcedony, at the district's heart - ch 11. Statlos Shrievsby, an officer of Correct Conduct leading a remnant squad into the Reproach to recover her, hears "a real scream from Nasely" as the Anchorwood beast hunts her through the ruins - ch 11. He runs toward the tower, viewing her rescue as his "ticket out" of exile - ch 11.

Nasely leans from the tower window and speaks to him in plain Pel, begging him to get her out - ch 11. But the Reproach's corruption has taken Shrievsby's tongue: "antique Maric pours out against his will," and "in his eyes, she was smiling, and the minstrels played the overture of the next dance, and every note was beauty" - ch 11. Nasely sees him smiling and retreats in horror - ch 11. The beast continues to hunt her as the chapter closes - ch 11.

Into the Reproach

A rescue party of Ruslav, Lemya, Hellgram, Dostritsyn, Meraqui, and Grymme crosses the firebreak into the Reproach at night - ch 17. Nasely is again glimpsed in the tower window, "clutching her disintegrating protections" - charms and amulets she embezzled expedition funds to purchase in a desperate attempt to keep the beast at bay - ch 17. Her last protections crumble to dust as the Varatsin Duke's court materialises around the tower - ch 17.

Ruslav and Lemya fight through the court's illusion and climb the crumbling stairs of the tower. When Lemya bursts into the third-floor room, Nasely panics and fires her rod; Ruslav shoots back reflexively, wounding Nasely in the shoulder - ch 18. She flees upstairs; Ruslav and Lemya give chase. At the top, Nasely stumbles backward off the broken edge of the ruined tower, and Ruslav catches her by her uniform as buttons ping off. She bites his knuckles, then laughs and cries "Why, my lord! Such revels!" in old Maric - ch 18. She breaks free and runs toward a charging phantom knight, but the Anchorwood beast appears and attacks the phantom instead - ch 18.

Nasely convulses, foaming, speaking broken Pel and Maric simultaneously, her speech alternating between the two languages - ch 18. Ruslav drags her through the trees and then carries her over his shoulder through the firebreak into plain morning - ch 18. The beast erupts from the trees behind them; after Hellgram wounds it and is bowled over, the creature abandons him and turns back toward Ruslav and Nasely - ch 18. Ruslav shields Nasely and runs through the narrowest jitties, but the beast tears through a wall, sending debris into his back; he goes down with Nasely's weight on him - ch 18. Lemya throws a stone and screams; Nasely goes silent, possibly dead - ch 18. The beast lunges, jaws closing around Ruslav's body, and the chapter ends mid-attack - ch 18.

The Healing of Ruslav

Nasely is dead. Before dawn, days after the tower rescue, the scarred and battered Anchorwood beast slinks through the Gutter Districts carrying "the broken body of Companion-Archivist Nasely in its jaws"; residents shut their doors rather than acknowledge it - ch 20. At the edge of the Anchorwood, the beast drops Nasely's body at the feet of half a dozen Indwellers who emerge from the mist, "scores its teeth against a trunk to shed the burden," and communicates with them wordlessly before departing, wounded and trailing blood, as though expecting gratitude - ch 20. The beast appears to have delivered her corpse to the Indwellers as a gift or offering - implied, ch 20.

In Correct Speech's cells beneath the Donjon, Ivarn Ostravar speculates that Nasely has not been recovered, leaving ruin-divers a chance to take custody of her body - ch 21. When Lemya, Ruslav, and Yasnic are thrown into the same cells, Ruslav confirms Nasely is dead, killed by the thing from the Wood - ch 21. Her warding bundle was stolen during or after her death; its recovery becomes the object of a city-wide search, and the Indweller's mask - the only item taken from the Impounded Evidence Office - is later identified as the sole stolen object - ch 30. The anonymous Indweller prisoner in the adjacent cell shivers at the mention of Nasely's death, and the chapter implies but does not confirm that this Indweller was "the thing from the Wood" that killed her - implied, ch 21.

The Rescue from the Donjon

Nasely's death is referenced indirectly in the aftermath of the Indwellers' assault on the Impounded Evidence Office. Nasely had previously examined two victims found with their minds emptied - "not asleep, not even unconscious, exactly" - and filed that report, which is consulted in the post-raid investigation - ch 30. Hegelsy notes that Ochelby's death in Correct Erudition limits that School's cooperation in the ongoing crisis - ch 30.

Relationships

• Sage-Archivist Ochelby - Nasely is his secretary and subordinate, a role that grants her no authority and, in the moment of crisis, no protection. Ochelby brings her beyond the Anchorwood against her explicit wishes, and when the beasts attack his first thought is to thrust her in front of him for "a moment's more life" - ch 2. She obeys, flees, and survives; he does not.

• Ruslav - Ruslav is her would-be rescuer in the Reproach. He shoots her in the shoulder by reflex when she fires her baton at him in panic, then catches her by her uniform as she falls backward off the tower's broken edge, buttons pinging off into the dark - ch 18. She bites his knuckles in terror, then laughs, then breaks free and runs. He shields her body through the jitties with his own, takes debris into his back, and is caught beneath her weight. Whether he survives is left mid-sentence.
