Left-city is the collective name for the lower Wards of Eres Ffenegh, the commoner's half of the city, bounded on its upper edge by the great wall known as the Gaelensreach that separates it from the more elevated Right-city. Rough, swearing, governed by what its inhabitants call "fish-hook discipline," the ward is the city's working ground: home to hospitals, guild halls, plazas, and the people who do not live behind the wall. In the Palleseen siege of Eres Ffenegh, Left-city is the zone that absorbs the first shock and the last. At the opening of the conflict it is already partially occupied; at the close it is the final strip of free ground, chewed through by enemy infantry to the very gates of the Gaelensreach before the city falls.
Its significance to the series lies in what it makes visible. Where Right-city stages the arguments of Inquirers, Archivists, and Invigilators, Left-city stages the body: the wounded in a hospital tent that cannot be moved because moving them would kill them, the domestic sounds of occupying soldiers-pots, whistling, a tinker's hammer-leaking through rubble, the street-fighting where a Sage-Monitor bullies conscripts into killing and is himself shot dead in a cellar. The ward's arc across the single book is one of progressive compression: a broad occupied and free territory narrows to a single contested strip, then to a final breach at the wall, then to nothing. The fall of Left-city is the fall of Eres Ffenegh.

Left-city comprises the lower Wards of Eres Ffenegh, physically situated below and outside the Gaelensreach, the wall that divides the city into two social strata. The ward's character is defined by this subordination: it is rough, profane, a place where people swear "the feck" and discipline is colloquial rather than institutional - ch 3. Its streets, before and during the siege, contain the Customs House, the hospital and soup kitchen of the Hospitallers, the working ground of the Fisher's Guild, and the plaza of Godsgift Square, which sits hard against the dividing wall, making it a contested threshold between the two halves of the city - ch 5. During the Palleseen occupation of the ward's lower streets, Kiffel ea Leachan is escorted through flattened rubble and hears pots, whistling, a tinker's hammer, and complaints about quartermasters rising from the ruins-the sound of a garrison living, not merely holding - ch 2. The ward's inhabitants include practitioners of informal and conjuring arts; Kaele, a working girl at the Pandaemonium, is identified as a Left-city girl - ch 13.
Who Holds It
At the siege's opening, Palleseen forces have already seized a portion of the ward, including the ruined Customs House, but failed to push as far as the Gaelensreach before winter - ch 2. The unoccupied remainder retains civic self-organisation: the Hospitallers run their hospital and soup kitchen, and the Fisher's Guild maintains a presence capable of moving goods past both the Palleseen blockade and the Os-Fferegh authorities - ch 3. Over the course of the siege the free zone shrinks to a single strip between the occupied streets and the wall, where the hospital tent is pinned because the wounded cannot survive relocation - ch 29. In the final assault the Palleseen chew through the entire ward to the gates of the Gaelensreach; the Resolute Battalion and magical specialists breach the square before the wall, and the ward passes wholly into enemy hands as the siege concludes - ch 41.

Professor-Inquirer Fowlett, reorganising the Palleseen attack, assigns Sage-Monitor Brandery to command street-fighting against an anticipated Left-city counterattack, while sending Fellow-Archivist Dantell to the front line with the Specialist team to place stasis wards on the gate under fire - ch 40. On the last day, Brandery commands the street fighting through the ward, bullying his soldiers into killing, before descending to a cellar to execute Mellister personally and being shot dead by her - ch 41. The Gaelensreach itself is held by counter-curse during the final phase while the Pandaemonium is stormed and the Pal army retreats before the demon legion - ch 41. The ward is also the site of quieter, civic-scale events: the singing of The Boat Songs in the Middle Parlour of the Pandaemonium by off-duty militia and Left-city irregulars aware that the Pals will attack within a day or two - ch 10-and the relaying of the Palleseen ultimatum by Kaele, a conjurer of the ward - ch 13.
